The state of Michigan plans to purchase 10,000 acres in the Keweenaw Peninsula from 32,541 acres the Nature Conservancy acquired at the end of 2022.
That was the message DNR public land specialist Scott Whitcomb recently told the audience at a meeting in the Allouez Township Hall in Keweenaw County. The land is referred to as the Keweenaw Heartlands.

Hunters registered a total of 1,905 black bears in Michigan during 2023 seasons, according to preliminary figures from the DNR. That total is down 68 animals from last year, but almost identical to the 1,907 bruins checked during 2021.
State licensed hunters accounted for 1,844 of the total harvest this year and 61 were tagged by tribal members.

Fifteen-year-old Dylan Meyer from Zeeland, Mich., shot a 20-point nontypical buck in Ottawa County on Sept. 10, the second day of the 2023 youth deer hunt, that is now the state record in the youth category for nontypicals.
The huge set of antlers have a gross score of 211-6/8 and net 206-1/8, according Commemorative Bucks of Michigan measurer Allen Wilde. The previous number one nontypical in the youth category was a 29-pointer that Michael Derosa shot in VanBuren County during the firearms season 1989 on his first morning ever of deer hunting.

Tina Taylor from Marquette managed to bag a U.P. black bear on her first bear hunt thanks to a pair of organizations that provide opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors. Those organizations are Courage Incorporated based in Ishpeming and Camp Josh in Ontonagon County.
Taylor took part in the first bear hunt hosted at Camp Josh. Taylor suffered a spinal cord injury in 2011 that partially paralyzed her. Through persistent rehabilitation efforts, she was able to regain her ability to walk by 2022.

The Nature Conservancy has closed to full-sized vehicles a popular access road in Keewenaw County, Mich.
TNC locked the existing gates on the Clark Mine Road, which is a major logging road built and maintained by logging companies. It had been open to all vehicles through 2022.
Full-sized vehicles are now prohibited from using the road, which goes approximately five miles from Copper Harbor to the Mandan Loop, another major logging road that currently remains open to all vehicles. The Clark Mine Road remains open to ATVs and UTVs.

Even though the Michigan DNR estimates that moose numbers in the western Upper Peninsula have remained statistically unchanged since 2019, the number of moose that ended up as road kill reached the highest ever in 2022, according to DNR Wildlife Research Specialist Tyler Petroelje.
“In 2022, there were 20 reports of moose vehicle collisions,” he wrote in an email. “Prior to 2022, the previous high number of moose-vehicle collisions occurred in 2012 when 18 incidents were reported to DNR employees.”

Forester Stuart Boren from Florence, Wis., a border town adjacent to the Upper Peninsula, documented on June 25 the collateral damage that a severe winter has on whitetailed deer.
“I was watching a big doe from the house,” Boren said. “We had been seeing her for weeks and she was used to us. She had her head down and I could tell she was licking something. A half hour later, after she was gone, I went to where she had been.”
The doe had birthed twin fawns, both of which were dead.

More than half of the moose that inhabited Isle Royale National Park in 2019 are now gone, most of them having died of malnutrition.
The island’s moose population was estimated at 2,060 in 2019, according to a news release from Michigan Technological University. Last winter’s estimate was 967, a decline of 54% since 2019.
