Ralph Loos: A tip of the cap to Dave Gannaway, Steve Sarley? A ‘yup’ will do him fine

Every other Friday morning for the past 18 years I’ve bumbled out of bed, clicked my email’s New Message tab and completed a vital task by typing one short word.
“Yup.” It’s one of those duties editors rarely talk about – we certainly complain about it, but only in mumbles and only to ourselves. My “yup” is always directed at the same inbox: one owned by columnist Steve Sarley.

Illinois Deer Classic on the move once again

Illinois’ place as a top whitetail state was reestablished – at least for a few days – by an event that appears to have gained a second breath of its own.
But just as a successful 2026 Illinois Deer Classic was packing up in Peoria, show organizers announced that yet another move for the oft-relocated showcase will take place in 2027.

Kentucky project aimed at bigger bass makes key finding

Bigger bass that are more aggressive in chasing an angler’s plastic worm from one end of the lake to the other?
Roughly 96.2% of Illinois fishermen responded, “yes, sign me up!”
That, of course refers to a non-scientific poll about an intensely-scientific endeavor being taken on by biologists in a neighboring state. News flash: Kentucky researchers have reported the finding of genetic markers associated with “enhanced size in native largemouth bass.”

Ralph Loos: Michigan hunting rules, they are a changin’ – and changes, they are a rulin’

So far, the only noticeable hitch in the refurbished Michigan spring turkey season was a gobbled reference in the printed version of the 2026 Spring Turkey Regulations Summary.
DNR was quick to post a note on its website, explaining the Summary “listed the statewide Turkey Management Unit 0234 season dates as April 25 to May 31, but the correct dates are May 2 to 31.”

Michigan fly-fishing school has the blueprint after 55 years of teaching

Women tend to pick up the basic skills of fly casting much easier than men – and the reason for this comes with a wry chuckle from a long-time Michigan fly fishing instructor.
“Women read the instructions,” John Cleveland explained. “That’s not a slight toward guys. But each year we get husbands and wives who come together to learn how to fly fish. The women are often much faster at learning.” Cleveland and two dozen other Trout Unlimited instructors are preparing to welcome beginners and experienced anglers of both sexes to the Michigan Trout Unlimited Fly-Fishing School.

7-pounder a reminder that Jasper County’s Newton Lake is a top bass water in Illinois

The 7-pound, 8-ounce largemouth bass caught by Mya Russell in March 2025 contradicts biologists’ recent summaries of Newton Lake’s population of the species.
Then again, 7-pound bass tend to contradict summaries of all sorts. Russell, representing Salem High School, was competing in a Illinois Coaches and Student State Tournament Trail (ICASSTT) event hosted at Newton.
