Thoughts on bowhunting whitetails during a bumper acorn crop

Every few years, we get a heavy acorn crop. And this year, 2023, is one of them in New York… in certain spots. That has been the report from many areas in the country where oaks are prevalent.
Bumper acorns equates for me, to spectacular bow hunting for whitetails in the early part of the season. However, though it may seem counterintuitive, some deer hunters have voiced a preference for those more frequent years with sparse mast (acorns, beech, apples, wild cherry, etc.)

The bucket list: a look at early season bucks

Chances are, those of us who hunt deer probably have trail-cam shots of our top whitetails handy and scrollable on the phone: those collected in summertime velvet.
And it’s always exciting, partly because velvet antlers look larger than they really are when in hard-horn come September. A little fantasy never hurt the bucket list anyway. Part of the pre-deer-hunting-season ritual is showing off our biggest, maybe oldest, but probably highest scoring rackers to our buddies and anyone who cares.

Oak Duke: Bass are why I love weed

Oh come on folks.
After reading that headline you might be tempted to think that I mean the smokeable kind of weed.
Nope, water weeds. The kind that means bass! Bass love weed, for shelter, food, oxygen, and shade.
Shelter is obvious. In many ponds and lakes, weed is like a magnet, attracting bass to relative security. Critters of all sorts hang in the weeds too…and are there for bass to munch upon.

Old standby dry fly, a Light Cahill, does the trick on some beautiful brown trout

Standing knee deep in a June trout stream just past sunset might not be appealing to many folks because of the immense swarms of flying insects, but to this fly fishermen it was heaven.
They didn’t care about me. No biters here. These bugs had a biological imperative to fulfill.

The many sounds of a turkey and trying to make sense of them all

She called me every name in the book. I thought I’d heard them all.
No, not my wife, girlfriend, co-worker, or boss or even the tattooed gal that cut me off at the gas station pump.
This hen turkey had evil in her heart as she let me have it, expressing her liberation from all matriarchal and feminine restraint.
I suppose I asked for it.

A new turkey call might be just what’s needed to get that gobbler to sound off

I think turkey calls are a lot like guitars. A good guitar player can coax a sweet sound out of any decent guitar. And a good turkey caller knows how to run a call.
But there’s a veil of mystery to calling in gobblers that has never lifted. One morning the woods are ringing with gobbles. Still no guarantee we’ll get one to come in. Even lots of answers. Anticipation. The woods are dripping with dew and expectation. Of course the next morning, right back there, first light. Yet when there, the woods are quite as a mouse.
