Ohio Insider: Where do things stand with deer disease in the state?
In a recent conversation I had with ODNR Division of Wildlife deer project administrator Mike Tonkovich, the deer doctor provided an update on where things stand with regard to deer disease in the state.
Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is typically more prevalent in the summer months, but as of late August when my talk with Tonkovich occurred Ohio had largely dodged the proverbial EHD bullet in 2023. Contrast that to 2022 when Ohio suffered a rather severe outbreak of EHD in late summer.

Ohio’s Madison Lake holds its own for crappies, largemouths
Madison Lake in central Ohio was formed for recreational purposes in 1946 by damming Deer Creek.
And, although it’s not far from Deer Creek Lake and its fine fishery, Madison holds its own on the fishing spectrum, particularly for largemouth bass, says Ethan Simmons, a fisheries biologist for the ODNR Division of Wildlife in Columbus. Small-game seasons getting underway in Ohio
Several small game seasons are well underway already in the Buckeye State, and more – plus furbearer seasons – are beginning soon.
And, there’s already been an early gun season for deer in the Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) of Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties. That hunt was held Oct. 7-9. Bow season within the DSA started early, on Sept. 9, and runs through the end of archery season on Feb. 4, 2024.

Ohio Division of Wildlife to add Alabama, Florida bass to state’s ‘injurious’ list
A proposal that flew under the radar at a recent meeting of the Ohio Wildlife Council is an item that should be concerning for the state’s anglers.
The ODNR Division of Wildlife recently proposed adding Florida and Alabama bass to the state’s list of injurious aquatic invasive species. Injurious Aquatic Invasive Species (IAIS) are animals that cause or are likely to cause damage or harm to native ecosystems or to commercial, agricultural, or recreational activities that are dependent on these ecosystems.

Duck, goose seasons about to commence in Ohio
Waterfowlers in the Buckeye State are gearing up for the start of a new 60-day season.
The early waterfowl season has wrapped up for Canada geese and teal as has the youth waterfowl season. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service establishes the framework for the waterfowl season and the ODNR Division of Wildlife sets the season dates.

NDA report: Bucks most susceptible to CWD, but does remain important part of management equation
White-tailed bucks are more susceptible to chronic wasting disease (CWD) than any other deer.
That’s the crux of a recent CWD report from the National Deer Association (NDA). CWD is an always fatal neurological disease that has cropped up over the past 20 years, ultimately making a significant change in the deer management world.
