Angler sets new Maryland state record for false albacore

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has officially recognized Jack Dorman of Mount Airy as the new state record holder for false albacore. His 26.0-pound catch surpasses the previous record of 23.5 pounds that was just set earlier this month.
Dorman, 22, was fishing offshore near the Jackspot and the 20-Fathom Line on July 20 aboard the charter boat Game On, captained by Scott Stapleford of Ocean City.

Striped bass fishery plan to address looming crisis

Aiming to rebuild the struggling striped bass population, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission recently released a proposed update to the striped bass fishery plan for public comment.
The update, known as Addendum III, includes various options that could lead to new regulations for anglers and watermen. Following a public comment period on those options, final adoption of any new measures is expected at the commission’s annual meeting in late October.

Pennsylvania angler breaks Maryland tilefish record during his first time fishing

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently confirmed Dominic Vuotto, of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, as a new state record holder for blueline tilefish.
Vuotto landed a 21.3-pound blueline tilefish July 26 while fishing offshore near Washington Canyon. The outing was Vuotto’s first time fishing.

Maryland sees long-term increase in oyster abundance

The population of Maryland’s oysters has grown significantly in the past 20 years, according to the results of the latest benchmark stock assessment for the species.

Maryland snakehead record broken by 21.8-pounder

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently recognized Matt Foreman, of Crownsville, as the new state record holder for Chesapeake channa – also known as northern snakehead (Channa argus) – in the state’s Invasive Division.
Foreman caught the 21.8-pound fish by bowfishing on the evening of June 7 in the Susquehanna River below the Conowingo Dam.

High school student earns 20th Maryland Master Angler award

Nathan Choinski, of Churchville, has earned a Master Angler Milestone Award under the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ FishMaryland program.
Choinski is the 20th Master Angler since the program began in 2019. The award recognizes recreational anglers who catch 10 trophy-sized fish of different species in Maryland.

Blue crab population decreases in Chesapeake Bay, weather blamed

The Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey, a cooperative effort between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, estimates 238 million blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay in 2025, a decrease from last year’s 317 million crabs.
The results showed decreases in the abundance of adult male and female crabs, as well as a decline in the juvenile population, marking the sixth consecutive year of below-average juvenile recruitment found in the survey.
