Wisconsin’s statewide gun deer kill up a tad from 2023

There’s a lot less blaze orange in Wisconsin’s annual gun deer hunt, but the 553,652 license buyers were still able to bring home more venison than they did a year ago.
However, for the second straight year – the first time that’s happened in more than 40 years – the blaze orange army failed to register 100,000 whitetails on opening weekend. DNR Deer Program Specialist Jeff Pritzl said part of the reason goes to a shift in hunting pressure, with about half of the state’s deer hunters in the woods months before the November rifle season opener.

Wisconsin DNR collects 3.5 million Chinook eggs for Lake Michigan stocking

Wisconsin DNR fisheries crews handled 4,580 king salmon at the Strawberry Creek facility near Sturgeon Bay this fall, about 10% above than the long-term average.
More than 3.5 million Chinook eggs were taken from more than 600 of the healthiest females and fertilized with sperm from a cross-section of males. After a series of steps designed to produce disease-resistance and improved hatching success, the eggs were trucked to the Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery.

Charter fishing means good times on the Great Lakes right now; here’s how to increase your odds of success

If you’ve ever thought about booking a Great Lakes charter fishing trip, 2024 might be the year to see what it’s all about.
A mild winter has led to catches heating up earlier than usual this spring, and increased stocking across the Great Lakes states and improving natural recruitment in recent years means there’s plenty of fish available. Even though there are hundreds of U.S. Coast Guard-licensed charter captains around the lake, anglers who call early have the best chance to find an opening on a preferred date.

Wolves killed at least 29 dogs in Wisconsin in 2023, third highest year on record

Wolves in Wisconsin killed at least 29 dogs and 39 livestock between April 21 and Dec. 11 last year.
The number of dogs killed was the third highest on record. Only the years 2016 and 2020 had more verified losses of dogs. Twenty-eight hunting dogs and one pet dog were killed. At least eight other dogs were injured.

Burnett County giant bear ties for Wisconsin’s archery state record

At 6-foot-1 and 315 pounds, Bill Foster is a big man.
An experienced hunter with archery pro shop experience and two Oconto County trophy black bears under his belt, one might think he wouldn’t get rattled while perched 16 feet up a tree overlooking a baited site on private land. But the bear he saw approaching in a Burnett County forest Sept. 8, 2022, had his heart pounding so hard it took him more than a minute to calm his breathing enough to take – and make – a 28-yard shot with his Obsession Turmoil compound.

Wisconsin’s Tom Tiffany, other members of congress take another shot at wolf delisting

U.S. Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, Wisconsin’s 7th District Representative in Washington, D.C., is taking another shot at giving states the right to manage gray wolves without federal interference.
Tiffany, Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, R-Colorado, and 19 other members of Congress reintroduced the Trust the Science Act earlier this month. The legislation follows the scientific recommendation of wildlife experts that wolves should be removed from the federal Endangered Species List and that their populations should be managed by states.
