When it comes to turkey hunting, sometimes we all question ourselves.
When to call, what types of sounds to make, or how and where to set up on that gobbler are all things that we could all use some advice on. I am always amazed at how I am hunting an animal with a brain the size of a walnut, yet I often times get duped by these birds. Simple tools for the turkey woods that make a big difference in helping a youngster get started

The youth turkey season is fast approaching in Ohio (April 13-14) and it is absolutely one of my very favorite times of the year.
Turkey hunting is my passion, and as the father of a young hunter, it allows me the opportunity to get in the turkey woods a bit earlier than I normally would as I get to take a youngster hunting and help introduce the kid to the wonderful world of the spring turkey hunting.

I killed a deer last fall. That’s right, I killed one. Notice I did not say “collect, take” or “get.” I could have said harvested because that is also what I did since we will eat it, but I did not – and will not – hide nor try to disguise what I did.
Nor should I. There are enough people who are too far removed from where their food comes from as it is, I certainly don’t want to add to that separation.

With all of the technological advancements available to hunters today, it leaves many outdoorsmen and women seeking to find ways to shoot at animals further away or see when and where they are moving at specific times in specific areas.

Hunting escape routes for mature bucks is not necessarily something new, yet it may be underutilized. I discovered just how successful such areas can be, especially during the opening days of gun season, several years ago.
I had hunted a particular farm for a few years before I fully realized what a big buck magnet these areas can be. It was not until a hunting buddy tagged an impressive 11-pointer on the opening day of gun season in a certain strip of woods overlooking a slough that I realized this may not have been an accident.

For years, I vowed that I would never use ladder stands while deer hunting. I simply felt that they were too big and would be too obvious to get most deer in close for archery shots.
I felt like I had to be perched in an ultra-small, compact hang-on platform in order to be effective at getting close to the more mature, wary whitetails. This thought kept me from using any ladder stands for the majority of my past deer hunts.
