Commentary: How do squirrels beat summer heat?

Maple trees, gray and fox squirrels discovered, have a natural system of providing solar protection and geothermal cooling.
The tree’s simple, oppositely-arranged leaves are excellent at blocking much of the radiant energy that could make a squirrel’s hairs stand on end. Crawl underneath the tree’s canopy and the air temperature can drop up to 20 degrees on sunny days.

Late honesty leads to relaxed penalties in Wisconsin deer tagging case

A non-hunting father-in-law avoided the truth as long as possible in trying to protect his son-in-law, but in the end the truth revealed that both men engaged in “license loan/borrowing” violations during the opening weekend of the 2022 gun deer season in Wisconsin, Nov. 19-20, in Outagamie County.
In the end, the gun-deer hunting son-in-law told the truth and that helped him receive lighter punishments than might have otherwise been the case.

Wisconsin wardens ‘team train’ during sturgeon season

When it comes to legally spearing lake sturgeon during a bonafide season, Wisconsin is the place to go for the 16-day season on Lake Winnebago and three upriver lakes that make up the Winnebago system.
Unlike many fishing and hunting season activities, sturgeon spearing is not discussed during a recruit warden’s training. There’s plenty of rules to understand during this unique season.

Newly assigned Wisconsin wardens have to learn work area

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Warden Nick Al-Moghrabi took an assignment in Bayfield County in July and has been learning his new work area ever since. He’s been driving a lot, checking to see where residents, visitors, and absentee cabin owners recreate and where the highest populations of bears, deer, turkeys, and ruffed grouse are congregating.
