Jeremiah Haas: Some trail cam tricks for preseason preparation

September is right around the corner and if you have not put the trail cameras out yet, you will likely be doing so really soon.
While it is simple to put them on the same trees pointing out into the field each year, if you have put the time and expense into the program, you may as well try to optimize your process to truly understand what is out there.

Jeremiah Haas: Illinois youth trap shooter finishes among nation’s best at championship in Michigan

Once qualified, they need to qualify for the finals by being one of the top 401 scores after the first event. The second event is the finals, so you know there is a lot of pressure on these high schoolers when just 100 targets determine a year’s worth of work.

Jeremiah Haas: Shared experiences is what the outdoors is about

Outdoor users have been known to get black eyes over the how and why we go into the woods or onto the water. Whether it is the latest cheating scandal at a fishing tournament, or the deer hunting personality that is ticketed with poaching because they let the prize of a “book” deer diminish their level of hunting ethics, it is easy to get down on the entire industry.
What traditionally was a sport, or lifestyle, that was handed down from generation to generation, the modernization of the outdoors is big business – and for some personalities, a gray line. With that, I would like to share with you one of those stories that will hopefully remind you why we go into the woods, or head to the water, hopeful to experience one of those days which will be recited to family and friends for years to come.

Jeremiah Haas: From seeking walleyes to tuna, fishing is a universal passion

Many of us can remember the first time we had a fishing pole in hand, or at least we have seen the pictures of us doing so as toddlers. Whether you are in the Quad Cities, Europe, Brazil, or Thailand, nearly all anglers can speak a universal language – fishing.
I was fortunate to experience that love of angling recently in Hawaii aboard a charter trolling for tuna, mahi, kingfish, and marlin.

Jeremiah Haas: Plenty to appreciate as the Upper Mississippi River Refuge turns 100

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is celebrating 100 years of conservation and recreation this year.
The creation of the refuge was largely the result of the Izaak Walton League of America, and particularly the efforts of its founder, Will Dilg. In the summer of 1923, Dilg learned of a plan to drain large areas of the river’s backwaters, so he put together an ambitious solution to the drainage plan.

Jeremiah Haas: Here’s how mussels help fish in Illinois and Iowa’s Quad Cities area

The Quad Cities has a long history with freshwater mussels in the Mississippi River and other local tributaries.
Mussels were first used for tools and food by the Native Americans that lived along these rivers. Then in the late 1800s, it was discovered Midwest mussels were perfect for making buttons. The harvest across the Midwest was impressive. Within a couple decades though, resources became depleted.

Jeremiah Haas: Technology changing the way fish hatcheries operate, too

I have spent a lot of time over the years talking about the newest technological toys to help while hunting and fishing. Those include ozone machines, thermal scopes, side scan technology and a host of others.
While all of them have changed the way I hunt and fish, each making life easier, probably the most improbable technological advancement I have seen is what has occurred at some Midwest fish hatcheries, including my own.

Jeremiah Haas: An Illinois mentor is still bringing joy to his former student

Recently, I was fortunate to learn the story of an Illinois sportsman who was a mentor to many young boys during his lifetime. As I sat down with Jay Wolf, who you may recognize from his photography, I could see the emotions on his face as he told the story.
“I received a message asking to call Coach Ed Alepra, who was my coach at Erie High School. I am awful with telephone calls, but I knew I needed to make this call because Coach Alepra asked me to come down. I was aware he had not been feeling well,” Wolf said.

Jeremiah Haas: Mother Nature doesn’t follow ‘the book’

According to the outdoor rule book, walleyes spawn at 42 degrees on wind-swept shorelines over rock on a full moon! Big fish eggs are no good because they are from old females. Ducks and geese don’t eat fish (excluding mergansers of course). Need I go on?
If you have spent a bit of time researching the outdoors, you likely have heard or read numerous things like this because we all want to understand the outdoors better as a fisherman, hunter, or naturalist. However, if there is anything more true than these observations, it is that Mother Nature rarely follows the rules.
