Common plant known as Carolina azolla could help reduce food insecurity, Penn State researchers find

An often-overlooked water plant that can double its biomass in two days, capture nitrogen from the air — making it a valuable green fertilizer — and be fed to poultry and livestock could serve as life-saving food for humans in the event of a catastrophe or disaster, a new study led by Penn State researchers suggests.

Notes off a soiled cuff: A merger of Pennsylvania’s Game, Fish & Boat commissions possible?

Seven or eight years ago – after decades of trying – I decided to stop attempting to convince readers and leaders that the Game and Fish & Boat commissions should be merged, because having separate agencies is wasteful and expensive.
Pennsylvania is the only state in the country to manage fish, wildlife and natural resources this way – and the redundancies and inefficiencies are obvious – but since the Game Commission started raking in millions of dollars in shale gas receipts from beneath state game lands, it has seemed like a frivolous argument to make.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Many show up to make their voices heard at Pennsylvania Game Commission meeting

Long-time Pennsylvania Game Commission watchers think the 62 people who testified at the Jan. 27 meeting is an all-time record.
During the height of the “deer wars” in the early 2000s, there were meeting crowds larger than the close to 200 who packed the agency’s Harrisburg’s auditorium and lobby Jan. 27, but never before did that many speak. Twenty-six of them – mostly zoo officials, trappers, conservation organization members and avowed animal protectionists – said they supported reintroduction of the pine marten.

Senators say Pennsylvania Game Commission owns enough game lands

After Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Bryan Burhans gave his annual report to the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee Feb. 8, senators wanted to talk about his agency’s land acquisition.
Sen. Scott Hutcinson, R- Butler, Clarion, Erie, Forest, Venango and Warren counties, asked Burhans whether the Game Commission had an upper limit on the amount of game lands acres it acquires and owns.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Is Pennsylvania next to ban coyote hunting contests?

Pennsylvania has more organized coyote hunts than any other state, about two dozen. Increasingly, in other states, the public has found them to be barbaric.
Last month New York became the 10th state to ban coyote-hunting contests. Others include Maryland, Oregon, Washington, California, Vermont, New Mexico, Arizona, Massachusetts and Colorado.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Tom Boop’s deer column elicits mixed opinions from Pennsylvania hunters

I asked him why the tragedy affected him so deeply, given that he didn’t know Seville, and his response will no doubt resonate with many aging hunters. “I will turn 69 in a few days, and I have had double hip replacements,” he said. “So I understand the challenge of treestands.
