Clearwater Lake: Come for the lakers, stay for the scenery in Minnesota’s Cook County

Located about 40 minutes from Grand Marais, Minn., up the Gunflint Trail, Cook County’s Clearwater Lake is a deep, cold Canadian Shield system. It’s also one of the clearest lakes in this area, and partially is located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Clearwater is known primarily for its lake trout production.

The book on Ruth Lake in Minnesota’s Crow Wing County: plentiful largemouths, panfish, pike

The first thing that stands out about Crow Wing County’s Ruth Lake is its 600 acres of amazingly clear water. It’s historically had water clarity of 20 feet or more, and it does to this day.
The lake also features some good structure, including several pronounced points, bars, sharp breaks, rock, gravel, and vegetation. At first glance, Ruth looks like it should be an excellent walleye fishery, but it’s more noted for producing largemouth bass, panfish, and northern pike.

Anglers enjoy the peace of Portage, and its many fish in Minnesota’s Cass County

Located just off Highway 2 near Bena, Portage Lake tends to get lost in the shadows of two of the state’s most notable Cass County fisheries, Winnibigoshish and Leech.
Portage is a 1,538-acre lake with mostly undeveloped shorelines, so it tends to offer a tranquil fishing experience. And further, its walleyes are plentiful. Portage is a hidden little gem, that’s tucked away in the heart of Chippewa National Forest.

Just off I-35, Minnesota’s Clear Lake is a clear choice for multi-species anglers

Located just off the bumper-to-bumper traffic along Interstate Highway 35 near Forest Lake, you’ll find one of the more popular fishing destinations in Washington County: Clear Lake.
This 429-acre lake might not be given a thought by most folks as they fly by it during rush-hour travels, but local anglers are well aware of its reputation as an excellent multi-species fishery.

Think structure for deep, hard-water walleyes

Deep water is a relative term since it can vary from one system to the next. Deep might only be 15 feet on one lake, but as much as 30-plus on another.
Regardless, walleyes relate to deep water during the ice fishing season. More specifically, they relate to deep structure or deep water adjacent to structure. Those are the primary keys to consistently pulling walleyes from the depths during the winter.
