Pennsylvania Game Commission confiscates castrated buck with antlers removed that was kept as pet

A Fayette County, Pa., woman has been charged in connection with keeping a wild deer as a pet and resisting its removal from her property.
Tammy Shiery, 64, was arrested Feb. 25 when she tried to prevent state game wardens from seizing a two-year-old buck the Pennsylvania Game Commission alleges she illegally adopted and kept at her Bullskin Township home. The deer, which she named Baby, had been castrated and surgically altered to prevent antler growth, according to commission southwest region information and education supervisor Andy Harvey.

Despite declaring the second year of controlled bowhunting in city parks a success, officials in Pittsburgh have enlisted federal sharpshooters to cull deer through the end of March in the two largest parks.
Although 50 archers had harvested a total of 199 whitetails in Frick, Riverview, Schenley, Highland, and Emerald View parks when the season ended Jan. 25, marksmen from the U.S. Department of Agriculture were slated to begin performing night-time targeted removal in Frick and Riverview the week of Feb. 11.

Bizarre, invasive jumping worms are infesting Pennsylvania

Although jumping worms make for lively bait, they can spell disaster for Pennsylvania forests.
Unlike European earth worms, which provide a variety of environmental services, such as nutrient recycling and soil aeration, the jumping worm – a southeast Asian native and relative newcomer to the U.S. – has been known to strip forest floors of vital leaf litter, and disrupt the food chain, according to entomologists like Penn State University’s Michael Skvarla.

At long last, ice fishing occurring across most of Pennsylvania

The deep freeze of recent weeks had ice anglers across Pennsylvania dusting off the tip-ups, augers, and other gear they hadn’t used in at least two years.
And with more frosty weather in the forecast, hardwater action may have been just heating up.
“It’s shaping up to be a pretty good season,” Tackle Shack’s Mike Haraschak reported Jan. 17, when Tioga County lakes offered plenty of fishable ice. “People haven’t been able to ice fish much the past couple of winters, so everyone has the itch to go out.”
