For young Pennsylvania fly-tying phenom, it’s fish, fish, fish

Karrie and Doug Sampsel had little idea that the $40 fly-tying kit they gave their son, Landis, for Christmas when he was 10 would ignite a passion.
“He’s always been a fisherman, and so when we saw the kit we thought, ‘let’s see if we can get him into fly-tying,’” recalled Karrie, of Pleasant Gap, Centre County, Pa. “We gave him the kit and his interest took off.”
Now 14, Landis is making a name for himself in local fly-angling circles with his subsurface and dry flies.

Pet deer ‘Baby’ from Pennsylvania still in custody after being confiscated

Tammy Shiery, of Fayette County, has suffered a setback in her quest to be reunited with a young white-tailed deer she named Baby.
Just before an April 3 court hearing on a petition for return of property, Shiery’s attorney, Vince Tiberi, withdrew the petition “because of a technicality in the way it was filed” said Shiery, 64, of Bullskin Township, indicating that she could not provide further details.

Pennsylvania sees record demand for state campsites after federal closings

The slated closing of several federal campgrounds in Pennsylvania is spurring a surge in reservations at state parks and forests.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reports a nearly 30% increase in campsite reservations in March compared to the same time last year, as a result of the planned shuttering of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facilities at Raystown Lake in Huntingdon County, and Cowanesque and Tioga-Hammond lakes in Tioga County amid a growing enthusiasm for outdoors recreation.

Report says Pennsylvania lags behind in corridors for wildlife

Citing habitat loss and fragmentation as the number one threat to Pennsylvania wildlife, conservationists are calling on elected officials to prioritize the creation of wildlife corridors across the state.
In a newly released report, Wildlife Corridors: How Reconnecting Habitat Is Protecting Pennsylvania’s Native Species, the non-profit PennEnvironment describes how development and road construction are impacting species ranging from brook trout to black bears and outlines innovative ways to improve connectivity.

Owner of Pennsylvania pet deer that was confiscated expresses mixed feelings as case draws intense publicity

As she prepared for an April 3 court hearing aimed at getting back Baby the deer, Tammy Shiery expressed mixed feelings about the intense publicity sparked by her strange saga.
“It’s been a mixed blessing,” said Shiery, 64, of Bullskin Township, Fayette County. “On the one hand I’m happy the word has gotten out, but on the other I feel uncomfortable about some of the coverage.”

Sportsman profile: Pennsylvania’s G. Warren Elliott devoted to aquatic resources

Although he couldn’t have known it as a child, growing up on Pennsylvania’s famed Yellow Breeches Creek sparked in G. Warren Elliott a lifelong interest in fisheries conservation.
The Pennsylvania citizen representative to the Chesapeake Bay Commission, who recently completed terms as Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission board president, and as vice-chair of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, Elliott spent countless childhood hours exploring the creek and teaching himself to catch trout on doughballs, worms and a $5 fishing rod.

New twists emerge in Pennsylvania case involving pet deer that was confiscated

With a sharp rebuke to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele withdrew all charges against a Connellsville woman forced to give up the pet deer she named Baby – but the story has not ended there.

While Tammy Shiery, 64, of Bullskin Township, no longer faces misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, obstructing the administration of law or other government function, or disorderly conduct, or a summary count of unlawful taking of game, she has vowed “to move mountains” to get Baby back.

Tests disclose Pittsburgh crows died from avian flu

Highly pathogenic avian influenza – often referred to as HPAI – recently was confirmed in American crows in Allegheny County, adding to the number of cases surfacing across Pennsylvania.
About 50 dead crows were found on and alongside railroad tracks in the city of Pittsburgh at the end of January and reported to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. As part of its field investigation, the agency swabbed three of the crows, which were confirmed to have the highly contagious, deadly disease.
