State Roundup: Wisconsin sturgeon spearers anxiously monitor the ice situation on Lake Winnebago system

Most any angst associated with this warm spell is going to center on the Lake Winnebago system where sturgeon spearers were anxiously monitoring the ice situation last week.
The 16-day sturgeon season will open Saturday, Feb. 10, ice or no ice. The DNR does not have the authority to close the season based on ice conditions. Sturgeon spearers must make their own decisions as to whether they have “safe” ice upon which to travel.

Dean Bortz: Just what the heck is a ‘green sheet’ on the Wisconsin NRB meeting agenda?

I’ve been navigating the natural resources management “hallways” from the Wisconsin DNR to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to the state university system to local conservation groups to the Natural Resources Board and to the Conservation Congress (whoops, almost forgot court systems and the legislature) for so long now I know where to turn and who to talk to if a question arises on any topic.
It’s long been second nature for me and any other outdoors reporter.

USFWS takes over Wisconsin wolf shooting case out of Bayfield County

Federal conservation officers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) office in Madison have taken over the investigation surrounding a possible case of self-defense shooting of a timber wolf in northern Wisconsin.
Since this incident was first reported in Wisconsin Outdoor News, it’s been learned the incident occurred in northern Bayfield County. The landowner self-reported the wolf shooting to the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Department.

Dean Bortz: Take the hunting time with grandkids where you can find it

I’ll tell you this much for free – there might be nothing better than having teenage grandkids who like to hunt, fish, and trap, and who have a driver’s license.
Now, I know what you’re thinking about that last part. Ol’ Deaner is making Mason drive home from the “corner store” after we stop off after shooting hours for a try at the daily shake and hoisting a few rounds of Stump Lifter.
Nah, nah. Nothing like that. Couldn’t risk it, not with his mother, who happens to be my daughter.

Wisconsin State Roundup: DNR responds to allegations by former wardens of bias and harassment

Veteran outdoors reporter Tim Eisele wrote a Commentary in the last issue touching on potential issues in the DNR’s Bureau of Law Enforcement following reports by Laura Schulte of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel of allegations by several former wardens of bias and harassment.
At the time of that deadline no response had been received from the DNR or governor’s office. Katie Grant, DNR communications director, has since replied.

Dean Bortz: “Cracky” leaving big shoes to fill in southern Ashland County, Wis., town

Friends and family packed the Catholic church in a very small town in southern Ashland County right to the rafters on the morning of Dec. 16 to say farewell to a good man.
Cracky.
He was so well known locally he didn’t need to use the last name of Weinberger. Cracky. That’s all anyone ever knew him by, for the most part.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Why did the DNR’s chief game warden not present Shikar Safari Club award at NRB meeting?

You’ll find a news story by veteran reporter Tim Eisele on Brian Knepper, a Wisconsin DNR game warden who received this year’s Shikar Safari Club award at the Dec. 13 Natural Resources Board meeting in Madison.
In the past, the DNR’s chief game warden has typically presented this award to the recipient, so it seemed quite unusual that DNR Chief Conservation Warden Casey Krueger was not in the room that day to present the award to Knepper.
