Great Lakes bobcats make a comeback; what opportunities exist for hunters, trappers?

Bobcats, because of their shy, reclusive behavior, cause many people to think they’re a rare wildlife species, although when wildlife agencies throughout the northern tier of states evaluate their status, they’re finding bobcats are thriving.
Being habitat generalists, they can occupy a wide range of habitats from rural to suburban areas. Throughout the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region, population densities vary, but overall their population is better than it’s been in decades.

Town of Drummond wrangling with Wisconsin DNR over release of water into trout stream

The lack of rainfall in northwest Wisconsin has resulted in a weather classification of “abnormally dry,” with the impacts being felt on lakes and rivers throughout the region.
Bayfield County’s 97-acre Drummond Lake is one such lake. Area residents are concerned because the DNR is mandating a minimum water flow through the Drummond Lake dam. This is due to a state statute mandate that 25% of the water any dam holds back must be released downstream to protect aquatic life. According to town officials, that is questionable logic in this situation.

New aviation fuel plant in Hayward, Wis., would bring market for the timber industry

The Forestry Revitalization Act, a bill introduced by state legislators recently, could result in Wisconsin becoming a global leader in the production of sustainable aviation fuel from the state’s forests.
According to legislators, the bill would support Wisconsin’s logging industry and the broader Northwoods economy. The harvesting of Wisconsin timber has been a significant contributor to the state economy since the late 1800s, but that role has been decreasing.

What can pheasant hunters expect from the 2025 season? Here’s the forecast from the Midwest

For many upland bird hunters, ring-necked pheasants are their gold standard. Most years, there’s significant variations in the Upper Midwest states that hold a population of these charismatic birds, but this year there seems to be optimism in all the primary pheasant-producing states.
As always, the components of top-notch habitat and good spring weather to pull off strong nesting efforts and high percentage chick survival is the determining factor in each fall’s hunting success. Here’s a breakdown of what hunters can expect this fall in pheasant-producing states.

Town boards still awaiting Wisconsin legislators’ action on statewide wake boat laws

From the arrival of summer a few short months ago, silent sport enthusiasts and high-powered motorboat owners have enjoyed Wisconsin lakes. As these activities wind down, the question is when do the rights of one group infringe on lake health and the enjoyment by others?
The unanswered question centers on wake boats. Since the expected legislation to restrict wake boat use wasn’t introduced at the state level, local governments have now stepped in to fill that void.

Apostles’ Outer Island lake trout cooperating this summer on Lake Superior

Active lake trout have been rewarding fishermen this summer who are willing to run the more than 20 miles from Bayfield, Wis., to the Outer Island area of the Apostle Islands archipelago.
Not all fishermen have the type of boats needed to make that run safely. Those who don’t, but still want to catch lake trout, can hire a charter captain to get out there. Dave Schulz, of Iron River, is a retired DNR forester and former superintendent of the Brule River State Forest. Schulz also happens to be a licensed charter captain who loves fishing and introducing people to Lake Superior.

A great-grandfather’s .410 strikes again, this time on a double-bearded tom for an 8-year-old hunter

A passion for the outdoors runs deep in the Bontekoe family. With the help of a well-worn Mossberg bolt-action .410 shotgun passed down through four generations to 8-year-old Carter Bontekoe, that passion will run deep into another generation.
“My dad passed the gun down to Carter after my son, Bob, used it when he was a kid. I know my dad would be thrilled knowing his great-grandson is keeping the hunting tradition alive. Having his grandson Bob being Carter’s mentor for this hunt just puts icing on the cake,” said Carter’s grandfather, Jeff Bontekoe, of Shell Lake, Wis.

Long-term delegates on Conservation Congress challenged in Wisconsin’s Washburn, Bayfield county

A degree of political backlash or reprisal seems to have crept into the election of Washburn County Conservation Congress delegates during the April 14 spring hearings, with the focus apparently on long-serving delegate Joe Weiss.
The Conservation Congress, founded in 1937, is the only statutory body in Wisconsin where citizens elect delegates to advise the DNR and the Natural Resources Board on natural resource management. The election of delegates appeared to be what brought a record of 108 attendees to the Washburn County Conservation Congress’s spring hearing.
