Lake of the Woods offers a little bit of everything for ice anglers

Early this winter, anglers across much of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan faced uncertain ice conditions on lakes that in most years offer solid footing and even drivable ice shortly after New Year’s Day.
That was not the case last winter on Minnesota’s Lake of the Woods, where plowed roads, heated icehouses, and two well-provisioned on-the-ice taverns welcome anglers from near and far. A variety of fish species, too, are available in good numbers and sizes from toss-back to would-you-look-at-that-now!

Wisconsin’s Dave Cook Memorial Shoot raises $30K to support scholarships for students

The Mayville Gun Club hosted the sixth annual David G. Cook Memorial Shooting for Scholarships sporting clays event Sept. 22 that will help support trade school students.
Cook, who succumbed to brain cancer in 2020, founded the event in 2018 to raise money to support scholarships for area students in the building trades. Cook’s family and friends have continued the event, which raised more than $30,000 this year, according to Cook’s widow, Kathy Cook.

The donation of a 2024 Can-Am Defender 4X4 UTV will help a non-profit group offer a greater variety of outdoor adventures to Wisconsin veterans. Wounded Warriors United of Wisconsin (WWUWI), based at Country Haven Farm in rural Gleason in Lincoln County, was one of three service groups in the state selected to receive a Defender this year, compliments of BRP, parent company of Can-Am.
WWUWI takes Wisconsin veterans on hunting and fishing trips in the state and elsewhere.
