My aunt and uncle, who I grew up next door to, were both heavy smokers. About once a month they’d hop in the car and make the 30-minute drive over to Vermont to stock up on cigarettes, which New York, as any smoker knows, has taxed into oblivion.
On March 14, the fisheries staff of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation held a public meeting in Alexandria Bay to discuss the status of Lake Ontario’s Eastern Basin and the St. Lawrence River black bass population.
Approximately 60 people attended the meeting where fisheries biologists provided an update on the black bass population.

Black bear hunters in New York harvested an estimated 1,356 black bears during the 2023 hunting season, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This was a slight increase over the 2022 harvest of 1,318 bears, but below the five-year average of 1,450.

April 1 is still the day when brook trout season opens in New York. And when it does, especially in the northern part of the state, anglers are ready.

It feels good to be talking about camping again, and in this case it’s DEC’s Summer Camps program, which in this writer’s opinion is one of the agency’s shining stars.

Last year, New York State Environmental Conservation Police Officers generated over $46 million in civil penalties, funding that went directly into the state’s general fund.
Proposed legislation would change that and direct this and other funds generated, such as those from game, fire and invasive species violations (among others) into a special fund that would support ENCON law enforcement across the state.
Two years ago, in early 2022, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s fisheries team was in the process of rewriting several freshwater fishing regulations.
At that time brook trout management was set aside with the idea that eventually the state’s official freshwater fish would have its own management plan. That time has come.
