Adrienne and I are not summer people. Neither of us are fans of the heat. I’ll take plowing snow over mowing a lawn any day of the week and both of us prefer the change of seasons so prevalent during the spring and fall months than to any other time of the year.
One activity, however, that we do get the most out of each summer is camping, and all the extras that come with it. Fishing, paddling and simply relaxing by a lake and/or campfire certainly helps us get through the summer, unless it’s extremely hot.

Coming up July 10-14 nearly 130 New York student athletes will head to Michigan to compete in the USA High School Clay Target League national competition. As you’ll see from this story, the New York league continues to grow, which it has been doing steadily for nearly a decade, something that’s been a pleasure to watch.
As a local outdoor newspaper columnist at the time, I can clearly recall a meeting I attended for the purpose of getting scholastic clay target teams started here in the Southern Adirondack region. Similar efforts were in the works elsewhere in New York.

Lake Durant: Camping and fishing in New York’s central Adirondacks

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is in charge of the state-owned campgrounds in the Catskills and Adirondacks. Among them are a handful that are scattered upon lakes from Old Forge to Blue Mountain Lake in the central Adirondacks.
One of those is on Lake Durant, just three miles east of the hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake.

Nearly 61-pound striped bass is biggest in tournament history at New York’s 23rd Manhattan Cup

New York Outdoor News Long Island Fishing Reports contributor Mike Dean not only took top honors in the striped bass category at the recent Manhattan Cup, held June 7, he also caught (and released) the biggest striper in the event’s 23-year history.
Dean’s estimated 60.16-pound mammoth striped bass is a personal best for the finance trader from Quogue, in Suffolk County, N.Y., who also authors the Manhattan to Montauk angling blog.
“I’m a humble guy,” Dean said, “but for a day I felt like the best angler in New York.”

New York kids fishing derby celebrates 30 years of angling fun on June 30

When the Rex Nye Kid’s Fishing Derby takes place once again at the Whitesville Rod and Gun Club, in Steuben County, N.Y., this year on June 30, its organizers will be raising a glass, or a cup of coffee, to offer a toast.
The group has much to celebrate, as this year’s event – which always coincides with New York’s summer free fishing weekend – will mark it’s 30th, and the fact that they have helped thousands of kids learn about fishing over the past three decades.

Legislation passed in New York includes electronic tags bill, while expansion of crossbow use in archery season fails

A bill that would eliminate the requirement for Southern Zone hunters to display a back tag in the field and instead provide electronic proof (where possible) of licensure has passed both houses and is likely headed for the desk of Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The bill, A10565/S8644, requires that a person hold a license, tag or privilege in an electronic or other acceptable format (print) pursuant to regulations for the hunting of deer and bear.
