Cornell University bans animal processing after two students used dorm kitchen to butcher black bear

Last fall, the story of two Cornell University students who butchered a legally harvested black bear in their college dorm kitchen went viral. A recent university policy change, however, will ensure this doesn’t happen again.
The students, whose names and exact location of the hunt were not published, harvested the bear in southeastern New York during the opening weekend of the 2025 early black bear season there. Upon research, they found no reason for not being able to use the campus dorm kitchen facilities to process the bear themselves.

New York’s Saratoga Sand Plains WMA is Northern Zone hunting with a Southern Zone feel

Saratoga County, in eastern New York, is roughly 844 square miles in size. About half of the county’s acreage lies in the Northern Zone, and half of that is within the Blue Line boundary of the Adirondack Park.
But outside the Adirondacks are a handful of sporadic, but sizable public land tracts that are located quite close to the Northern/Southern Zone boundary line, which stretches west from Schuylerville along Route 29 and onward. The further south you are in this area, the more these lands take on a small forest, or even Southern Zone (minus the agriculture) feel. Among them is the Saratoga Sand Plains Wildlife Management Area, which is a 1,000 acre mosaic of public land chunks of various sizes with other municipal lands nearby.

New York camper still missing in Moose River Plains

State authorities are reaching out to the public for assistance in locating a 73-year-old camper who was reported missing in the central Adirondacks last month, and who has not been seen since early August.
A New York State Police press release said that on Aug. 17, they were notified of a possible missing person, Craig K. Streeter, of Mahopac, in Putnam County. Streeter was last heard from on Aug. 2 and was last seen that same day at the Stewarts Shop convenience store in Indian Lake, in Hamilton County.

Adirondack Land Trust protects 2,390 acres in Champlain Valley

In July, the Adirondack Land Trust announced it had purchased 2,390 acres in the Essex County town of Chesterfield for permanent conservation.
A press release said the land trust plans to hold the parcel for future transfer to New York State, eventually adding all 2,390 acres to the Adirondack Forest Preserve within the Adirondack Park. The land will become available to the public for outdoor recreation, including hunting, hiking, and birdwatching.

In the previous issue (Sept. 4) of New York Outdoor News we ran DEC’s August announcement about a new public archery range that’s now open in Albany County; the second of its kind in New York.
This one is at the Black Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area, in Vooreesville, just west of the capital city and even features a wheelchair accessible raised shooting platform. DEC also recently reopened what was its first public archery range, this one at the Saratoga Sand Plains WMA constructed in 2021. A new pavilion was just built there.

Bear seasons begin New York’s big game hunts; here’s what to know

Black bear hunting is about to get underway in New York, and it will only intensify as the month goes on. An early firearms season in a number of southeastern New York Region 3 and 4 Wildlife Management Units begins Sept. 12. And on Sept. 19, the long firearms season in the Adirondack portion of the Northern Zone also opens for black bears, with the archery season opening in the remaining Northern Zone WMUs for bears that same date.
