Outdoor Observations: Advocates of antler point restrictions in Michigan disappointed, but fight isn’t over

Antler point restrictions remain a passionate topic among Michigan’s hunting community.
APR advocates were out in force at the June Natural Resources Commission meeting at the RAM Center in Roscommon with high hopes that APRs would be implemented in the Lower Peninsula, in the Upper Peninsula, or across the state.

Michigan DNR estimates state’s moose population at 426 animals

Michigan’s moose population appears to be similar to what it has been for the past decade, according to estimates following a 2023 winter moose survey.
That was the message DNR Moose Specialist Chad Stewart presented to the state Natural Resources Commission at its June meeting at the RAM Center in Roscommon.
The estimated population in the Upper Peninsula’s core moose area is 426 animals, which is “not statistically different” from the 509 estimated in 2019, the last time moose were surveyed, according to the DNR.

Michigan’s two-story Littlefield Lake is managed for walleyes

Isabella County’s Littlefield Lake has pleasing aesthetics and clear water, but don’t expect to catch a limit when fishing there.
It’s a deep lake with lots of steep drop-offs close to shore, and limited aquatic vegetation so fishing can be downright difficult.
But the lake supports a good population of warm-water fish species including largemouth bass, walleye, pike, and panfish, so it is worth checking out.

Michigan Natural Resources Commission approves new deer regulations for 2023

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission passed several deer hunting regulations at its meeting here on June 8.
Deer hunting regulations are set on a three-year cycle so the new regulations will be in place through the 2025 hunting seasons.
After much discussion and public comment, the NRC approved the state’s recommendations with minimal change; however, one amendment passed by the commission calls for no use of crossbows in the Upper Peninsula during the late archery season.

Michigan eases requirements for handling nuisance wildlife

Acting DNR Director Shannon Lott signed an order at the May meeting of the state Natural Resources Commission making it easier for property owners to deal with nuisance wildlife doing damage to private property.
Under the revised order a property owner or authorized designee may now take beaver, cottontail rabbit, fox squirrel, gray squirrel, ground squirrel, muskrat, opossum, red squirrel, and weasel all year on property owned by the individual without a license if the wild animal is doing damage or physically present where it could imminently cause damage to the individual’s property.
