Bill Hilts, Jr.: VIP Fishing Day out of Dunkirk, N.Y., creates awareness for Lake Erie

Lake Erie’s walleye fishery continues to amaze people every day – diehard anglers, weekend warriors, and fishing enthusiasts that are new to the sport.
In the 16th annual VIP Lake Erie Experience held out of Dunkirk, N.Y., spearheaded by the Eastern Lake Erie Charter Boat Association, outdoor and travel media, tourism folks, politicians and more shared time on the water and broke bread together. Early August is a perfect time to be on the water and with the year the lake has been having for walleye fishing, organizers couldn’t wait.

New York’s Sturgeon Point Marina to improve access for the disabled on Lake Erie

Western New York Walleye, a progressive-thinking walleye club focused on Lake Erie, made a media announcement at its July meeting that was held at the Sturgeon Point Marina facilities in Derby in the Town of Evans, in Erie County.

Outdoor media event showcases great fisheries of western New York

Western New York is blessed with an abundance of water thanks to the area’s proximity to two Great Lakes and the Niagara River.
That translates into both fishing and boating opportunities that are outstanding when it comes to these popular outdoor pastimes. However, many of those who reside in the area tend to take these natural resources for granted. All it takes is a visit from some of the top outdoor media professionals in the world to remind them there is something special there.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: A Lake Erie walleye trip to remember with some help from above

Last year, 2024, was a bit of a blur. My wife and I made the executive decision to sell our house in the city of Lockport, N.Y.
It was controlled chaos as we readied to put the house on the market – taking things to a large storage area, donating to Good Will, putting things in recycling and garbage where appropriate. I can’t tell you how many fishing and hunting trips I put on the back burner because of this move – and that’s only half of it.

Opening day walleye takes Southtowns event on Lake Erie

On June 7, opening day of the Southtowns Walleye Association’s club contest held on Lake Erie June 7-15, Karl Clapp, of Lancaster, was fishing with boat-owner Dennis Packard, of Derby, Scott Miller, of Angola, and Bob Niehaus also of Angola, off Cattaraugus Creek. Fishing magic was about to happen.
As the saying goes, “sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good” as Clapp reeled in a big walleye.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Lower Great Lakes Office in New York conducting important work for native species and the habitat they call home

When it comes to native fish species such as lake sturgeon, lake trout, and brook trout (to name but a few), the Lower Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Conservation office located in Basom, N.Y., (part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and situated within the headquarters of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge), is an important component to on-going research and habitat work.
The office is part of a network of field stations across the country dedicated to preserving, protecting and enhancing our natural resources. It’s too bad not too many people know about it.

Trout stocking policy on New York’s Irondequoit Creek raises questions, concerns

A new stocking policy for Irondequoit Creek, in Monroe County, N.Y., is raising the ire of many local fishermen – but not all of them. Starting in 2026, Irondequoit Creek will no longer be stocked with brown trout by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
In a background statement from the agency, Irondequoit Creek is a 36-mile-long tributary to Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario and DEC recognizes its popularity as a fishing destination for anglers of all levels.
