Bill Hilts, Jr.: Poaching is a big problem, and it’s on all of us to tackle the issue

Last month, local news outlets reported on a Wyoming County man who pleaded guilty for numerous deer poaching incidents in Genesee and Wyoming counties, ending a nearly two-year investigation.
Tyler Jennings of Attica, N.Y., was required to pay $6,000 in fines and $750 in court surcharges. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation also revoked Jennings’ hunting privileges for five years. The time spent and resources used to nail this game law violator were extensive.

Broken down on the water? Erie Canal towing a continuing and traditional service

When the Erie Canal was created 200 years ago, canal boats filled with commercial goods and passengers were pulled down a tow path by a team of mules. This became a common occurrence along the 363-mile-long canal system.
Two centuries later, the canal system changed through the years from a commercial catalyst to an important recreational waterway. While many of the boats include personal watercraft like canoes and kayaks, there are still a significant number of power boats that utilize this unique transportation system – and that means there’s a chance of having a motor (or boat) issue.

Erie Canal bicentennial celebration under way in New York

The Erie Canal is celebrating a milestone of historic significance. It is the 200th anniversary of the construction of “Clinton’s Ditch,” a manmade marvel in its day that focused initially on commercial transportation operations. Since that time, it has become a different kind of outdoor wonder today.
The Erie Canal is now a recreational byway that transects New York State from Buffalo to Albany for 363 miles, with special attention on historical tourism, boating, hiking, biking, and fishing.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: What to consider when selecting a crossbow

A new era in big game archery hunting will begin on Oct. 1 in the Southern Zone of New York State (and Sept. 27 in the Northern Zone for that matter) – crossbows will now be included as legal archery equipment.
Jeff Pippard of Niagara Outdoors in North Tonawanda is a respected archery shop. He passes along some tips to consider if you are purchasing a crossbow.

New York angler’s biggest salmon ever caught lands her $20,000 prize

For 32-year-old Amy LoPresti, of Rochester, N.Y., fishing in her first fishing derby ever, it was like a dream come true.
Fishing on Monday morning, Sept. 1, the final day of the Fall Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby (held Aug. 15 to Sept. 1), she grabbed hold of a fishing rod that had a big fish on it while trolling off Point Breeze and the Oak Orchard River. Twenty minutes later, she was looking at the biggest salmon that she’s ever seen, let alone caught – a 33-pound, 3-ounce Chinook that took over the lead for the $20,000 Grand Prize.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Flipping out for water change fishing in New York’s Niagara River

When the winds of change blow on the Great Lakes, water is moved around – having a profound impact on where fish want to be. It was over 40 years ago when I first experienced a unique angling anomaly in Lake Ontario, and it continues to this day. Not too many people know about it, or so it seems. Maybe they want to keep it a “secret.”
When the wind blows out of the east for any length of time in the Western Basin of the lake, it pushes away the warm water. It is replaced with colder water. It scatters fish as they look for their preferred temperature zones.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: New handicapped access lift unveiled at Dunkirk, N.Y.

We all know what an absolute blessing New York shares in its Great Lakes resources. Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the Niagara River is the angling trilogy that is second to none in the world of freshwater fishing in the western part of the state.
Unfortunately, not everyone has access to these waters due to personal limitations. It needed to change.

Monster king salmon wins New York’s Summer Lake Ontario Counties Derby by 9 ounces

“It ain’t over till it’s over.”
That Yogi Berra quote was most appropriate for this year’s Summer Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby that concluded July 27. In the end, it was Larry Keppen, Jr., of Marion, in Wayne County, catching a monster 32-pound, 13-ounce king salmon the final weekend of the derby to win the $15,000 grand prize, along with another $1,000 check for top salmon for the week.
