Fall Lake Ontario Counties derby nets Bridgeport, N.Y., angler $25K grand prize

In the Fall Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby held Aug. 18 to Sept. 4, Robert Karker, of Bridgeport, was the $25,000 Grand Prize winner after he reeled in a Chinook salmon that weighed 29 pounds, 13 ounces. He caught the king near Sandy Pond in the eastern basin of the lake on Aug. 29.
Karker was fishing with Mike Daley of Grand Island, Fla., and Jim Walsh, of Lakeport, aboard their 21-foot Starcraft Islander named “Fishin’ Impossible.” It was around 10 a.m., as they moved from deeper water to 103 feet, Karker walked over to the diver to check it out.

Belly up to the famed Niagara Bar in New York for big brown trout

Arthur O’Mara of Moravia, N.Y., was fishing the Niagara Bar for king salmon the first weekend of the Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby in August with his buddy, Jeff Smith, of Pennsylvania. As they worked their Spin Doctor and fly in 65 feet of water, the rod went off. They expected it to be a small king. Ten minutes later, they found it was a 12-pound, 11-ounce brown trout. Who would have thought? It was the new leader in the LOC Derby and as luck would have it, it became the eventual winner of the fall classic.

Alleged cheating disrupts another Lake Erie walleye event, this time in New York

It was déjà vu all over again for Lake Erie fishing contests when a team competing in the Bart’s Cove Duel, at Dunkirk, N.Y., allegedly attempted to slip one over on tournament officials and other teams when they tried to weigh in fish that had purposely been weight-enhanced by stuffing other fish, or fish portions, into the stomach of a walleye.
The tournament, held July 29-30, featured a total of 34 boats that braved the wind, waves, and even waterspouts on Lake Erie, to compete for cash prizes and some great trips.

Age doesn’t matter to 83-year-old Frank Antenori, of Peckville, Pa. He was doing some laughing, imagining what would happen if his big fish won the Grand Prize, and living a dream when he was fishing on Lake Ontario, July 22, out of Oswego, N.Y. Antenori was fishing in the Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout, Salmon, and Walleye Derby (held July 1-30) and caught a 29-pound, 2-ounce king salmon to take over the lead for the $10,000 grand prize.

Crazy Eyes team wins New York’s Sunset Bay Shootout on Lake Erie

It was the 13th annual Sunset Bay Walleye Shootout on July 15 and a record number of competing teams topped out at 160 squads, all vying for $425,000 in cash and prizes. In the end it was the winning trio of Wes Bartoo, of Fredonia, and his “Crazy Eyes” team, made up of his 15-year-old son Wyatt and Will Baker, of Brocton, who boated away with a check for $20,000 by virtue of a six-fish tournament limit weighing 35.27 pounds of ‘eyes.

Lake Erie delivers in 39th Southtowns walleye tournament in New York

The 39th Annual Southtowns Walleye Association of Western New York’s annual contest was held June 10-18, a traditional kickoff event for the walleye fishing season on Lake Erie.
After nine days of intense fishing, it was the husband-and-wife team of Wayne and Ann Marie Doan of Hamburg that boated away with the big fish, a 12.56-pound walleye while trolling out of their 254 Larson Cabrio named “Trickster3” north of Seneca Shoal in 45 feet of water off Buffalo.
