Bill Hilts, Jr.: Jigging for king salmon gaining in popularity

With New York’s salmon fishing being as good as it’s been in 2024, there are a few diehard salmon fishermen who have taken fishing to a new level by jig fishing for kings. Isaac Nowak of Brockport is one of those anglers who has accepted the challenge.
“For area identification we would use the typical salmon ports to the west that usually hold large numbers of salmon for the summer,” says Nowak. “Ports like Wilson, Olcott, the Oak, and Sandy (creek) should all be very productive.”

Summer Lake Ontario Counties Derby comes down to the final weekend in New York

In the summer version of the Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby, catches made the last weekend of the month-long-contest (held from June 29 to July 28) managed to produce three of the four species category winners.
It also produced the Grand Prize fish when Robert Vazquez, of Rochester, N.Y., reeled in a 27-pound, 12-ounce salmon on July 26.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Third annual tournament by Catching Dreams Charters makes “reel impact” for kids with cancer

Capt. Ned Librock of Catching Dreams Charters has been taking kids with cancer fishing in the productive waters of New York State for nearly a decade now.
On August 2, he made more kids happy as he held the Third Annual Reel Impact Tournament to benefit his Catching Dreams initiative and help support the program through sponsor boats in the lower Niagara River. This time around, 15 area charter captains helped the cause by taking sponsors and their guests on the water. There were a few special kids accompanying sponsoring teams, too.
In the end, it was an outstanding day of fishing and fun as some 236 fish were caught in 4 hours.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Former record lake trout from New York was on a feeding frenzy

What causes a fish to grow to record proportions? Age certainly helps, and genetics may play a role. However, one big reason is an available food source that is both plentiful and full of nutrition. Mother Nature may also play an important role, too, in determining how things happen in the outdoor environment.
A perfect case in point was New York’s record lake trout that was caught in the shadow of Old Fort Niagara at the mouth of the mighty Niagara River on the fringe of the famed Niagara Bar. The year was 1994 – 30 years ago!

New state-record largemouth caught from Cayuga Lake certified by New York DEC

New York’s Cayuga Lake has a concrete reputation for great bass fishing.
In the 2024 Bassmaster Magazine 100 Best Bass Lakes, this Finger Lake ranked No. 8 for the Northeast Region of the country. In 2022, Thomas Russell Jr., of Albion, reeled in an 8-pound, 6-ounce smallmouth bass from the lake to take over the top spot in New York as the species leader.
The latest fish to storm the New York bass world is a 12-pound, 6-ounce Cayuga Lake largemouth bass caught by Jim Britenbaugh, of Fairfield, Pa., while practicing for a bass tournament on July 11. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed Britenbaugh’s catch as the new state record in a release on July 22.

Big fish caught from Lake Erie during Southtowns Walleye Association’s 40th derby in New York

It was a case of a “rocking” atmosphere, both literally and figuratively, as the Southtowns Walleye Association of Western New York held its 40th Annual Walleye Derby on Lake Erie June 8-16. The winners were announced June 23 at the club’s awards ceremony in Hamburg, with over $100,000 in cash and prizes at stake.
In the end, it was Tim Stone of Hamburg, fishing with his brother Chuck, also of Hamburg, rolling away with the big fish overall in their boat, “The Trolling Stones.”

Jefferson County longnose gar is new New York record

Chuck Zimmerman, of Hilton, was on the quest of a lifetime while fishing Butterfield Lake in Jefferson County, N.Y. – to obtain a mountable fish from the 962-acre body of water.
He finally achieved that feat on June 21 when he reeled in a state record 15-pound, 14-ounce longnose gar. His catch has smashed the previous record set in 2018 from Lake Champlain by one pound, four ounces.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Outstanding fishing on Lake Ontario incites debate

“Fishing is off the charts! Incredible, like nothing I have ever seen,” said Karen Evarts at the Tackle Barn and Boat Doctors in Olcott, N.Y. That was a text I received from her on July 5.
“It was insane fishing on the Niagara Bar today,” said an excited John Van Hoff of North Tonawanda. “We caught 40 king salmon today!” That was a recent note from a friend who is addicted to salmon fishing.
Capt. Matt Yablonsky with Wet Net Charters in Wilson exclaimed it has been the best fishing he’s seen for this time of year that he can ever remember. “It’s been outstanding!”
