As the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continues to work on revising the state’s draft wolf plan, the topic is no less heated for those who deal with wolves on a daily basis. The Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, the Wisconsin Association of Sporting Dogs, and Wisconsin Wolf Facts recently partnered to hold a third listening session, this one in Clintonville, allowing residents to speak about their personal experiences with wolves.

Drop in Wisconsin’s grouse drumming survey no surprise

Based on spring ruffed grouse drumming counts, Wisconsin’s popular game bird population likely stands three years past the peak of the 10-year cycle.
Preliminary drumming counts are down 11% overall across the state’s grouse regions, according to Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Biologist Alaina Gerrits, of the Woodruff office.

Mourning dove seasons and early teal and goose seasons offer some of the first fall hunting opportunities across many of the Great Lakes states. Not all states offer all three seasons, but most states do list one or more on their fall calendars.
Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Ohio offer seasons for all three, while Michigan hunters enjoy an early teal and early goose season. Mourning doves have yet to be recognized as a game bird in Michigan. Pennsylvania and New York were still setting season dates as of this writing.

Former DNR biologist explains air rifle deer hunting concept to Wisconsin Wildlife Federation

Keith Warnke, a former DNR biologist, represented the Air Gun Sporting Association at the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation (WWF) annual meeting on large-bore air rifles and their potential use in deer hunting.
Warnke went to a meeting after retiring from the DNR and happened to meet up with an acquaintance who runs the Air Gun Sporting Association. That group is looking to get a law passed to allow the use of large-bore air rifles in deer hunting in Wisconsin. Warnke was asked to help with this statute change. Wisconsin allows the use of air guns for hunting for small game.

Three state conservation groups welcomed another full house to its second state wolf plan listening session, this one in Prentice on April 22, with recorded comments again headed to DNR headquarters.
The Wisconsin Wildlife Federation (WWF), Wisconsin Association of Sporting Dogs, and Wisconsin Wolf Facts are now planning a third northern Wisconsin listening session, with date and location yet to be set.
