World trapshooting championships in Illinois hit 20-year mark

Trapshooters from around the world arrived in southern Illinois in late July to do what competitive trapshooters do: shoot trap against the best.
For two decades – less a pause during the COVID pandemic that temporarily moved the event to Missouri – the Amateur Trapshooting Association has staged its Grand American championships at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, Ill. Southern Illinois ecologist named ‘volunteer of the year’ by National Wildlife Federation

Martin Kemper practiced what he preached – and still does. The retired ecologist keeps busy volunteering for organizations like the Prairie Rivers Network, Master Naturalists, the DuBois Center, and more. He’s handy with a camera in the outdoors, too.

Chicago pet treats being made from river’s silver carp

The experiment of feeding invasive carp to humans – Illinois DNR’s rebranding of the fish now known as “Copi” – continues to gain slow footing across the state and the rest of the country.

Windsor hooks Illinois high school bass fishing state championship

Lake Shelbyville’s initial hosting of the Illinois High School Association’s bass fishing state championships appeared to go smoothly – foggy start and all.
After being held at Carlyle Lake since its inception in 2009, the two day tournament moved to Shelbyville as part of a 5-year schedule set by the IHSA Bass Fishing Advisory Board. This year’s finals tournament, held June 6-7, was also later on the calendar than in the past, part of a series restructuring that added a Regional Tournament round.

Illinois high school bass fishing finals set for Lake Shelbyville debut

An all-time high of 329 teams entered the Illinois High School Association’s state bass fishing series this year – a year of big change for the ground-breaking activity launched in 2009.
A new format structure was introduced this year, adding a regional round feeding into a sectional round. Dates of the state finals tournament were pushed back, too. And there is a logistical change: for the first time ever, the finals will not be at Carlyle Lake.

Cohos are again top fish for Illinois charter boat anglers on Lake Michigan

Illinois anglers accounted for nearly 75% of the 12,031 charter boat trips last year targeting salmon and trout on the state’s portion of Lake Michigan.
A total of 41,574 salmonids were harvested, with coho salmon making up 73% of the take. In all, the 2024 report covered fishing efforts by 8,684 Illinois residents and 3,347 nonresidents during 2,414 charter trips.
