Carbondale, Ill. — A new book by a well-known southern Illinois angler is designed to share tactics and strategies for catching fish at the bottom of the state.

Colby Simms shares secrets he’s gleaned from years of hooking catfish on the Mississippi River, muskies in Kinkaid Lake, crappies at Rend Lake, largemouth bass in Crab Orchard Lake, and stripers at Cedar Lake.

Published March 14 by Southern Illinois University Press, “Southern Illinois Fishing: A Comprehensive Guide for Anglers,” has received early praise from those who fish in the region.

“Tapping into his deep expertise from years of fishing around the world, Simms opens up the throttle on tactics and gear that bring in big southern Illinois fish all year round,” James Garvey, director, Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences at SIU Carbondale, said in a review of the new book.

“Engaging and exciting, this book shows us how a successful day of fishing is more than just catching fish – it’s about connecting with family and friends, being willing to learn every day, and staying curious about the natural world waiting for us outside.”

Sims, who has competed in several fishing tournaments and was winner of the first Illinois Muskie Tournament Trail Qualifier and IMTT State Championship, splits his time as a guide, public speaker, and outdoor writer. He is owner of Colby Simms Outdoors.
