A Michigan lawmaker who said he disagrees with DNR Director Scott Bowen on many things – including the belief the state’s hunters and anglers are eager to pay more for their licenses – is backing Bowen on one point.
Sportsmen should be more involved in what is happening at the State Capitol. On April 29, State Rep. Ken Borton, R-Gaylord, called for all stakeholders in Michigan’s outdoors “to be more engaged with the legislative process.”

The piece of Illinois legislation that has confused and frustrated deer hunters all spring appeared dead, but now appears to have sprung back to life – just in time for the final stretch of the General Assembly’s spring session.
Senate Bill 2756, which amends the Illinois Wildlife Code to increase the maximum capacity of centerfire rifles for deer hunting from one to three rounds, passed the Senate on April 15 and has been sent to the House.

Illinois youth turkey hunters shatter another harvest record

Again led by southern Illinois counties, youth turkey hunters kicked off the spring season by setting yet another harvest record.
DNR reported that a total of 2,318 birds were taken over two weekends, easily topping the then-record 2,099 last spring. It was the third consecutive year of record-setting harvests for the season.

A new rule that requires all turkey hunters to report their successful hunt within 72 hours of harvest or before transferring possession of the bird may have flown under some hunters’ proverbial radars.

Catch-and-release anglers have been hooking rainbow trout for nearly two weeks now, meaning it’s time for those hungry for the “nice eating size” fish to try their luck.

Illinois hunters don’t waste time during the spring turkey season

An interesting but not surprising fact about the Illinois spring turkey season: Hunters don’t like to mess around.
The first day of the first-season segment has by far produced the biggest harvest the past two years. In 2025, hunters took a tad over 1,000 birds on Day 1 of Segment 1. The first day of the second segment had a harvest of about 850. Of course, none of those numbers matter to hunters preparing for the 2026 season, which opens April 6 in the south zone and April 13 in the north zone.

Hunting contests ban again proposed in Illinois legislature

Another attempt to outlaw hunting contests in Illinois arrived in the legislature this session – a measure similar to past efforts, including House Bill 2900, which passed the House in 2024 but failed to make it to the governor’s desk.
Senate Bill 3063, filed by Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, on Jan. 29, was referred to the Senate Assignments Committee the same day.
