The following story took place during the 2018-19 trapping season on a section of federal lands called the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. I had been going through a rough time at this point of my life and was drifting from place to place, and really didn’t have a home other than my trapping cabin. The entire fur season was mine to do as I wished.
I was trapping well throughout the season and had an ample amount of fur stacked up. It was mid-January, the ice was forming and was thick enough to walk on.

Although New York trappers and fur hunters can expect modest prices on certain animals, there have been some silver linings in this year’s fur market. Examples of desired furs are beaver, marten, fisher, otter, and bobcats.

Nuisance wildlife removal is a problem, and it is on the rise in many New York areas for a number of reasons. For trappers, let’s discuss the things required to be a nuisance wildlife control operator and what the job entails.
In most states, including New York, to be a nuisance wildlife control operator and obtain a license, one needs to undergo a Nuisance Wildlife Control test and pass it with an 85% success rate. The tests are usually held at a regional DEC office. Mine was in the Alleghany, Region 8 office.

Coyotes may be trapped in the snow by a trapper who is willing to work hard for them. I have a few favorite trap sets for midwinter coyotes, including the trail set, chaff/hay bale set, and the urine post set.
At this time of year, the male coyote has two things on its mind: mating and eating. Food is scarce during the winter so coyotes will roam.

Trapping events fun, informative across New York

Each year New York plays host to several trapping conventions, including one in Little Valley hosted by the Cattaraugus County Trapper’s Association, and the other one in Herkimer organized by the New York State Trapper’s Association. These shows are the bigger trapping/sportsman shows that happen. There are two more in July, including one in Fenner, at Nichols Pond, and one called Camp Zerbe, in September.
