What to do when the longbeard you’re working is hung up and won’t come in

Hung-up longbeards are an issue for a lot of turkey hunters throughout the spring. If you have a tom that just won’t budge, you have some options. You might need to call with a little more emotion and variety, or if you’re hunting with a buddy, slip out while calling to convince the tom his girlfriend is leaving. (Contributed photos)

Only the birds know why they do it, but for some reason, plenty of toms will avoid wearing tags this spring by simply holding up outside of shooting range.
Every seasoned turkey hunter has dealt with this maddening issue, but it’s not a totally hopeless situation. There are options that can help you convince a gobbler to keep coming, but you have to understand how to read the situation first.
