Great egret breeding populations barely hanging on in Pennsylvania

The great egret population has largely recovered in the U.S., with the big birds becoming somewhat common in the South. But in Pennsylvania, the stately white fish-eater is listed as “state endangered,” with breeding populations in just two small, isolated areas.
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, one is on Wade Island in the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County, and the other is tiny Kiwanis Lake in downtown York.
