Ohio angler lands rare ‘blue’ perch; here’s the history behind it

Fish can show a wide variety of variation with their pigmentation patterns and arrays of colors. Males of some species such as darters, sunfish, minnows, and emerald bowfins display dazzling breeding colors during the spring.
Others are more temporary – such as when fish are subjected to stress or when they try to blend into their surroundings after they move into different habitat types. Yellow perch are an example of a species capable of the latter.

Commentary: An informed, nuanced view of the end of the deputies programs in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Game Commission and Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission deputy conservation officers were both an asset to the agencies and a liability. I believe the end of the deputy programs, if not absolutely necessary, was at least due.
Probably overdue. Both agencies ended their deputy programs in August. In the period from 1976 to 1999, as a full-time waterways conservation officer, I was responsible for more than 30 Fish & Boat Commission deputy officers.

Steve Piatt: When it comes to hunting and fishing, it’s simply memories for me, no statistics

I admittedly spend a bit too much time on Facebook, using it with the best of intentions, connecting with friends and fellow sportsmen, but then too often detouring into mindless stuff like old Seinfeld highlights, and reels of people falling or walking into street signs while on their cellphone.
But it can be a great tool, and I’m a member of several hunting and fishing groups, where I rarely chime in but gauge sportsmen’s sentiments on a variety of issues. And they have opinions on virtually any topic, rarely with anything approaching consensus.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Striving to be a well-rounded conservationist in a tough political climate

“The person who agrees with you 80% of the time is a friend and an ally – not a 20% traitor.” — Ronald Reagan
We are in peculiar political times, even reminiscent of antebellum America when states began to take sides for the inevitable Civil War. And no less worse, whole families were torn asunder into rivaling philosophical and political camps. Today, the country is at such a crossroads, facing the Nov. 3 election as to which trail the nation will take – and very possibly – embroiling us all in a no-win battle. As something of a microcosm of the nation’s voters are its sportsmen.

Additional walleye tourney added to fall Lake Erie schedule

There’s a new walleye fishing tournament on Lake Erie this fall.
Craig Lewis from Erie Outfitters and Brian Zarembski from Erie Marine Sales, both located in Sheffield Lake, Ohio, recently posted a video on Facebook introducing The Walleye Derby (TWD). The two men have been involved in organizing and running walleye derbies for many years. This year, they decided to part ways with the Walleye Slam and launch a new tournament.

Wildlife Production Areas are hidden hunting gems around Ohio

For some savvy Ohio hunters, finding a piece of public ground is to think small, not big.
And in the process these mostly bird and rabbit hunters have cornered the market on finding wild pheasants, a warren of cottontails and even a smattering here-and-there covey of quail. Toss in a cagey white-tailed deer, and such parcels become coveted havens peppering a portion of Ohio’s minimally available public hunting landscape.
