As the calendar turned to July, many anglers have been anxious to see when (or if) the yellow perch, arguably the finest tasting fish in the Great Lakes, would start biting in Lake Erie’s Western Basin.
For a number of years, July and August was a great time to catch a limit of fine perch before switching to walleyes and maybe land a bonus steelhead in the lake off of Ashtabula or Conneaut in Ohio. Poor reproduction for several years in a row in the Central Basin has changed this itinerary into a fruitless exercise most days now.
