Trump administration seeks to stomp out all fires quickly, reviving discredited policy

The deaths of three U.S. government firefighters in a Colorado wildfire are casting a spotlight on the Trump administration’s creation of a new federal fire service and its revival of a previously discredited policy to stomp out all wildfires quickly.
One of the killed firefighters worked for the U.S. Wildland Fire Service, established this year without customary congressional approval by drawing personnel from four agencies within the Interior Department.

Latest Wisconsin waterfowl survey shows stable populations, habitat conditions

The Wisconsin DNR announced that data is now available from the annual spring survey of breeding waterfowl. The survey indicated stable population numbers and habitat conditions for migratory birds.
The data from this survey is used as part of the overall survey of breeding waterfowl in North America, and the information helps the DNR make management decisions about waterfowl in Wisconsin.

New York hunter’s battle continues in 3-year bear baiting case

Warren Agostinoni Sr. spent his career in law enforcement, primarily working for the state Department of Corrections.
As such, Agostinoni prides himself not only for enforcing the law, but also obeying it himself, including on his many hunting adventures. So, when Agostinoni, who lives in Cairo (Greene County, N.Y.), harvested a bear on state land in September 2023 only to be later visited by state conservation officers who questioned the legality of his kill, he was shocked.

Two sisters, two Minnesota records, one shared passion for steelhead

A Minnesota fishing record is staying in the family after 12-year-old Sadie Spatafore caught and released a larger steelhead than her sister caught the previous year.
Dave, Lucy, and Sadie Spatafore fish together as often as they can, continuing a family tradition passed down through generations. While the Maple Grove trio regularly gets out on the water, Dave said his wife, Susie, sometimes joins but isn’t as obsessed about angling as he and their daughters.

Find the baitfish and you’ll find saugeyes

When saugeye fishing, do you pay attention to the behavior of the little fish in the water around you? Their presence can change your luck during the warmest months of the year.
Shiners and minnows are common throughout lakes and rivers. The species vary from lake to lake, but the importance of baitfish as a critical food source does not.

Jack Ammerman: I have a problem with ticks, and so should all hunters

I had to hold the cell phone away from my ear because my friend on the other end was mad. He spoke loudly: “I wasn’t in that fencerow for more than two minutes. I got back into the truck and I could feel something crawling across my shoulder blades. I pulled my shirt off and brushed my back against the truck seat.

A Michigan one-room schoolhouse turns fishing lures into a lesson

“How can we design and create fishing lures that will attract the fish we’re fishing for and sell well in our area?”
It’s the kind of question you might expect to hear at a tackle shop before the spring opener or batted around between experienced anglers after a long day on the river or lake. Instead, the question came from a handful of third and fourth grade students inside one of Michigan’s last one-room schoolhouses that is still operating.
