Illinois Mixed Bag: Pere Marquette State Park to host Two Rivers fishing fair

Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton will host the Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair on June 6. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park, which is near Grafton on Illinois 100. There are no admission or parking fees, and no fishing license or gear is needed to participate.

Illinois Department of Transportation worker ticketed over dumping of deer carcasses

An Illinois Department of Transportation employee has pleaded guilty to polluting a waterway after deer carcasses were dumped at Apple Creek near Roodhouse.
In mid-February, cattle farmer Robert Schollmeier took photos of an orange truck driving off his property. Schollmeier said he saw the vehicle dump deer carcasses onto the riverbank of Apple Creek. At least seven dead deer in different stages of decomposition were on the sandy bank of the creek and extending into the water.

Spring wildfires reshaping northern Minnesota forest habitats

More than 60 fires erupted across Minnesota over a two-day period in the past several weeks, including two major fires near the Two Harbors and Brainerd lakes areas.
Between May 15 and 16, weather conditions prompted the DNR to issue red flag warnings statewide.
“We’re at prime conditions where if a wildfire starts, it’s going to spread rapidly, and we were seeing that across many of the landscapes in Minnesota.”
