Steve Sarley: Illinois legislature will have to fix fishing license blockade

The issue of needing a social security number to go fishing legally in Illinois is something that can be quickly rectified.
As I mentioned in my last column, Stacey Greene-Fenlon from the Park Bait Shop on Montrose and the lakefront in the City of Chicago brought up the subject in a letter she sent to me. She also sent letters to her elected officials.

Browns Creek restoration opens new opportunity for Minnesota trout anglers near Stillwater

A new angling opportunity is available to residents in Stillwater following restoration efforts along Browns Creek.
The ADA-compliant access allows people with mobility limitations to fish the stream. A commemorative event took place last Friday, May 8 and included trout stocking, with Gov. Tim Walz and DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen releasing several rainbow trout into the creek.

History looks down from Wisconsin’s Lena tavern walls

One of Russell Demmith’s earliest memories is going to Hunters and Fishermans Bar in Lena as a kid with his father.
“I got a Baby Ruth candy bar that was like half a pound or a quarter pound for a nickel and it would last all day,” he said. “It would be so smoky in here that you couldn’t even see. Everybody was smoking cigarettes, big stogies or corn cob pipes. You could bring a ham in here in the morning and it would be smoked at night.”

Christine Thomas: A foggy morning in the turkey woods

The little cabin forests and fields had a great deal of turkey action all winter.
Trail camera photos showed at least two, and maybe three, sizable flocks. The tom/jake flock had at least 15 birds in the entourage. All winter long I forwarded photos to my youth hunter’s father, as well as my regular turkey hunting friends, Charmaine Wargolet, of Brookfield, and Elaine Kalmbacher, of St. Cloud. Readers have followed our exploits for many seasons.

Producing largemouth bass at Illinois’ Jake Wolf Hatchery is a mechanical process

Largemouth bass spawning season at the hatchery begins with a turn of a wheel.
In nature, spawning season begins as soon as the water is warm enough to let the bass know that it’s time, but at Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery, Illinois DNR’s Mason County facility where water levels and temperatures are controlled by humans, it’s a more mechanical process.
