First ever hybrid crappie enters Ohio’s record fish list

The convergence of a great fish and a good idea opened the official Ohio State Record Fish list for another hook-and-line category.
And the individual who put the wheels in motion also happens to love catching the species that made it all happen. Then again, as a hybrid, the new state record is the merger of two species. Credit Jesse Miller, 29, of Middletown, Ohio, for catching an estimated 11- to 12-year-old hybrid crappie on April 1.

Illinois research shedding light on what makes muskies tick

More than 94,000 muskies were stocked in Illinois lakes last year, setting up wild calculations of how many of them will someday be caught.
Using a fisherman’s proverb that claims muskies are the “fish of 10,000 casts,” math would suggest it would take nearly
1 billion – that’s billion with a “b” –  casts to land each of the stocked muskies just once.

Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin to give DNR another $50,000 for muskie stocking

The Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin (MCAW) will donate $50,000 to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) this year in another attempt to mitigate the agency’s muskie stocking cutbacks.
MCAW President Dave Allen told Wisconsin Outdoor News the money would be split between the Art Oehmcke State Fish Hatchery in Woodruff and the Gov. Tommy G. Thompson Fish Hatchery in Spooner. It is hoped the donation will result in an additional 9,000 muskies being stocked in Wisconsin waters.

Morel season: Minnesota’s tastiest spring tradition?

Spring in Minnesota offers an overabundance of outdoor opportunities.
How do you choose? You could be turkey hunting, shed hunting, chasing spring panfish on newly thawed lakes, tackling giant Rainy River sturgeon, fishing Mississippi River walleyes, targeting trout… the list goes on and on. But don’t forget about wild foraging opportunities, particularly for the crown jewel of the forest: the morel mushroom.

Fond du Lac County volunteers build ‘walleye wagon’ for Long Lake

Fishing for walleyes in Fond du Lac County’s Long Lake has been a grueling effort lately, but anglers can take heart with some help on the way in the form of about 750,000 walleye fry that were stocked in the lake last week.
The fry were hatched in a new Walleyes For Tomorrow (WFT) hatchery trailer that was placed on the south end of the lake this spring. It is the first time a hatchery trailer has been used at Long Lake, which covers 423 acres in Fond du Lac and Sheboygan counties.
