Minnesota lawmakers tackle fish eggs, off-highway vehicle trails and wild rice bills

Fish eggs exposed to viruses – and then disinfected – may be used for stocking in the future under SF4332, presented by Sen. Robert Kupec, DFL-Moorhead. The bill would modify provisions for importing, stocking and transferring eggs in aquaculture, allowing eggs to come from in-state and out-of-state sources.
Testimony was heard during the March 25, Senate Agriculture, Veterans, Broadband, and Rural Development committee.

Colleen Foehrenbacher: Preparation, careful handling, and storytelling turn wild game meals into connection

In the first few months of the year I focus more on emptying the freezers than filling them. Recipes get revisited, refined, and tested for the first time, and nothing brings me more delight than sharing our harvest with others.
Each year, I host a handful of wild game dinners at our home, with different groups of friends, neighbors, and folks associated with my workplace, Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.

Dan Ladd: Deer camp and road trips… cures for cabin fever in the offseason

Earlier this year, I vented in this space about not getting out on the hard water or ski trails during the winter months as much as I used to. I should confess that in recent years I’ve joined in some other activities that have become common during the early part of the year to help make up for it.
One of the sure cures for Cabin Fever is to, well, go to our Adirondack hunting cabin.

Generations of stewardship: Minnesota DNR leadership evolves, core values don’t

Ben Bergey and Merlyn Wesloh recently had the opportunity to talk about their DNR career experiences, and they discovered that – even 45 years apart – the similarities far outweighed the differences.
Among the things they have in common is an office in the Minnesota DNR Northwest Region building overlooking the north side of Lake Bemidji.

Looking to update your tackle arsenal? Here’s some great new lures for 2026

Lure companies try every year to create a new profile that fish haven’t seen.
For 2026, some new plastics for bass look like a COVID molecule with several creepy “legs.” Other companies are polishing up their swim baits that look ultra lifelike or jig heads that are able to be “seen” better by forward-facing sonar. In any case, anglers now have access to amazing baits to catch more, and bigger, fish.

Inside the Bassmaster Classic: Five days at the ‘Super Bowl’ of bass fishing

Many fishermen firmly believe that the Bassmaster Classic is the “Super Bowl” of bass fishing. While other organizations may match the money payouts, they don’t come close to the popularity, publicity, and enthusiasm generated at the Classic.

The 2026 B.A.S.S. (Bass Anglers Sportsmans Society) Classic was held in Knoxville, Tenn. March 13-15. It was a record Classic in many ways.
