USDA to open new Forest Service office in Madison

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Forest Service plans to open what it calls an “operational service center” in Madison as part of a sweeping – and still somewhat mysterious – restructuring that will also move the agency’s national headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Salt Lake City, Utah, the USDA announced March 31.

Another View: A two-bird bag limit for Minnesota spring turkeys? A bit of caution advised

The story of the wild turkey in Minnesota and at a national level is an amazing tale, but is also an often frustrating story to watch unfold.

Steve Piatt: A great year outdoors ahead – at least on paper

On paper, 2026 is shaping up to be a great year.

The last thing I need is to buy tickets for a Penn State football game, only to discover it falls on the Saturday of the youth pheasant opener.

What the heck does that mean? It means we anglers tend to spend more time wondering what walleyes are doing than wondering what our state legislators are doing or not doing.

Spring’s first bite: unlocking ice-out crappie patterns

Spring is here and we are welcoming it back with open arms. After another long winter, many of us are ready to be back in the boat on the open water.
Spring panfish get a lot of coverage all year, but most of that content focuses on the spawning periods. The ice-out timeframe rarely gets coverage, but it can be an incredible time for panfish – particularly, crappies and bluegills.
