Steve McComas: June is when Minnesota waters really hit their stride

The author has been tracking curlyleaf pondweed since the last century, starting in the 1990s. This year significant curlyleaf growth was found in Crystal Lake, Burnsville, as shown in the underwater photo. Curlyleaf is scheduled to be harvested in Crystal by mid-June. (Photo by Steve McComas)

For many outdoor enthusiasts in Minnesota, the summer opener is Memorial Day. I have been on lakes since ice-out and all indications are the lake critters and plants are on hitting their stride for early June and beyond.
Below are some of the findings I have observed.
