Commentary: Rockland County, N.Y., youth hunt opt-out is sad and shameful

Sadly, of the 54 counties eligible to be in the program Rockland County and Erie County have not signed up for it, as Dan states in his editorial. At least Erie County’s legislature approved it, but their county executive vetoed it.
New York’s Junior Hunting Pilot program is a great way to accomplish that goal.

Wisconsin DNR’s annual burning key to forest health, maintenance

Wisconsin residents have a new way to stay up-to-date on the DNR’s prescribed burning program.
An online dashboard on the DNR’s website lists information on the program, which consists of controlled fires to improve habitat, reduce invasive plant species, stimulate wildflowers and grasses, and control brush. The DNR launched the dashboard in 2021, said Michele Witecha DNR, prescribed fire specialist.

Turkey-talking tips from a Grand National calling champion

There’s nothing more exciting to a hunter in the spring than the thunderous gobble of a wild turkey. It’s the reason we drag ourselves out of bed in what is technically the middle of the night to head into the darkness and await the sunrise, listening for that gobble amid the serenade of so many songbirds.
Some birds are more cooperative than others after fly-down, and every once in a while a longbeard fires up beyond your wildest dreams.

Backtrolling for walleyes: An old-school, vintage technique that still shines?

Somewhere in the late 1960s, pretty much about the same time Al and Ron Lindner introduced their famous Lindy Rig to the fishing public, walleye anglers added backtrolling to their bag of tricks. Lindy Rigs instantly produced a lot of walleyes, especially once anglers figured out how to slow the presentation down and keep it vertical.

Patrick Durkin: This year’s Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame members getting recognition they long deserved

Whenever folks badmouth public servants who work for schools, agencies or simply “the government,” you’d like to stand them before a crowded auditorium to meet guys like Neil Payne, Keith McCaffery or the late William Lunney.

Once you whistled everyone to attention, you’d invite the critics to explain how and why these three public servants didn’t do enough for Wisconsin during their careers at UW-Stevens Point, the DNR, and our state courts, county offices and county parks. Once the critics failed to justify their griping, you’d hope they have the grace to concede Wisconsin never paid or honored these men enough during their decades of public service.
