Walleye, perch limits remain unchanged on Ohio waters of Lake Erie

Lake Erie anglers can expect the 2026 season to again offer world-class fishing, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
As walleyes from Lake Erie’s recent large hatches continue to grow, anglers can expect even more “Fish Ohio” sized walleyes to be caught in “The Walleye Capital of the World,” according to the Division of Wildlife. A Lake Erie “Fish Ohio” walleye is a fish measuring 28 inches or more in length.

Ohio’s 2026 spring turkey hunt on tap soon

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has announced hunting season dates for the wild turkey, one of Ohio’s most iconic game species.
Spring turkey hunting is an anticipated event for many Ohioans. During the 2025 spring wild turkey season, hunters checked 16,014 birds. Among those were 1,740 turkeys taken by hunters aged 17 and younger during the youth season.

Minnesota DNR finalizes new long range muskie plan

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has finalized its multi-year effort to update the state’s long-range plan for muskellunge. The plan will be used to guide muskie management in Minnesota through 2040.
The plan uses information from recently completed studies focused on muskie survival and ecology, along with community interactions and extensive stakeholder input.

In 50-49 vote, U.S. Senate ends copper-nickel mining ban near Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

A months-long effort by Minnesota and national conservationists to protect the Boundary Waters watershed failed Thursday morning when the U.S. Senate voted 50-49 to pass House Joint Resolution 140. The bill now goes to President Donald Trump, who will sign it.
“The United States is unequivocally worse off today than it was yesterday,” said Ely-based Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters (SFBW) Program Manager Matthew Schultz. “The simple fact of the matter is that the Boundary Waters now has one less layer of protection, and, with the sense of victory fresh on their minds, Congress can do the same on a tract of land near you.”

Pennsylvania Game Commission allots 12% more doe tags

The Pennsylvania Game Commission announced at its April 11 meeting that 1,469,000 antlerless deer licenses will be allocated statewide for 2026-27, which is 12% more than the 1,312,000 antlerless licenses allocated for 2025-26.
In a presentation to the game commissioners April 10, commission Deer and Elk Section Supervisor David Stainbrook noted that more does need to be harvested to reach management goals in many wildlife management units, especially with chronic wasting disease spreading in the state.

Minnesota bear numbers growing outside of their natural range

Minnesota’s resident megafauna – the black bear – is one of the state’s great conservation success stories during the past several decades, its population expanding both in numbers and geographically.
Today, the state’s population hovers between 13,000 and 18,000 and continues a gradual comeback from 2012, when numbers declined by roughly 50% from the highs of the early 2000s. Bear hunting, meanwhile, is growing in popularity.

Turkey vocalizations every hunter should understand to break the language barrier

Most turkey hunters have a grasp on the basic vocalizations that real birds make, but they often don’t understand what is being communicated.
Think of it sort of like a preschooler absentmindedly saying words for the sake of saying words, versus actually conversing with someone. One is background noise, the other is a method to convey meaning. This understanding is often what separates really successful turkey hunters from the rest of the crowd.
