Bill Hilts, Jr.: Birding goes to new level with a Smart Bird Feeder

I love birds. As I’ve grown older, my fascination with them has increased exponentially.
I’ve noticed that more and more as I’ve fished places like the lower Niagara River in New York, globally recognized as an important bird area throughout the entire corridor. It’s also one heck of a year-round fishery, complementing the bird diversity that also seems to extend over four seasons.

Project aims for better data on Michigan’s turkeys

No fewer than 10 dozen female wild turkeys will be fitted with GPS transmitters as part of a “first of its kind” project aimed at helping Michigan DNR better understand the bird.
Movements and habitat choices will be closely monitored by a research team, and additional banding of more turkeys will help produce information badly needed by biologists in the state.

Steve Pollick: A wise use of land, natural resources

A recent swing through Amish country down by the Ohio River gave pause to admire the quiet evidence of forward-thinking land stewardship practiced by these “horse-and-buggy” communities.
The occasion for my visit was the “Amish Birding Symposium,” recently renamed the Adams County Birding Symposium.

Pennsylvania’s elk herd, and hunting it provides, growing

The news released by the Pennsylvania Game Commission about the state’s elk herd and elk hunting at the agency’s April 10-11 meeting was all positive.
First, according to Jeremy Banfield, commission elk biologist, the herd is growing – slowly but steadily.

Field notes from a mesmerizing spring waterfowl spectacle

I went on my first spring goose hunt recently, and it made quite an impression.
I’ll share those impressions below, but I must start by breaking a rule of journalism. I cannot tell you where I went or with whom I hunted. I’m not the kind of hunter who guards honey holes, but my hosts are. And since I like them and want to be invited back, I’m going to respect their wishes and tell you only that had we been hunting 140 years ago, we would have been somewhere in the Dakota Territory.

Pennsylvania commission proposes stricter regulations for Ohio River basin catfish

Whiskery predators in western Pennsylvania rivers will get extra protection if new catfish angling regulations are adopted to begin next year.
The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission board will consider stricter regs proposed for both blue and flathead catfish in the Ohio River Basin, including the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers around Pittsburgh, at their quarterly meeting April 27.
