Michigan DNR confirms 31 cougar sightings in the state in 2025

A female cougar and her two growing cubs in the western U.P. have been documented several times via trail camera.

Michigan DNR reported there were a total of 31 confirmed cougar sightings across the state in 2025, the largest number of sightings since 2008.
The increase comes with a significant caveat: DNR pointed out that the number of trail cameras in Michigan’s outdoors has also edged up, with DNR operating more than 1,300 trail cameras in the Upper Peninsula alone.
