‘Trifecta’ of tactics helps hone in on poult survival rates for Wisconsin’s wild turkeys

Wisconsin wildlife biologists now have a new tool to measure turkey production thanks to an innovative study using trail cameras to track nesting hens and their poults.
“Our 2025 results confirmed what a smaller scale pilot program in 2024 signaled as being the likely outcome,” said Chris Pollentier, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) research biologist.

Meet Jim Ploen: A bowhunting and target archery icon still shooting strong at 98

Last August, I attended a 3-D traditional archery shoot at Cedar River Archers just outside of Austin, Minn.
Glancing at the sign-in sheet, I recognized names of archers who’d arrived before me, and one stood out: Jim Ploen. I hurriedly paid the fee and caught up with Jim’s group.

Bob Gwizdz: Was it a bad grouse year in Michigan, or sign of long-term decline?

What’s going on with ruffed grouse in Michigan?
I had a poor season, which is not especially unusual for me, but the majority of the guys with whom I kibitz about grouse hunting did, too. I asked Adam Bump, upland bird specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, what he heard.

What are you throwing in 2026? Top anglers share their baits, setups for the new year

My first fishing article for the new year traditionally revolves around places I would like to fish once lures start splashing instead of ricocheting.
This year, instead of planning where to go, I am searching for ideas about what to throw. If you are a fan of the old movie “Casablanca,” there’s a line where the French police captain, Louis Renault played by Claude Rains, tells his subordinates to “round up the usual suspects.” That best describes the anglers I recently contacted for this article.
The question posed to each of them was “What new lure, new to you lure, or new technique are you going to try in 2026?”

Steve Piatt: Finally, carrying a .30-30

I’ve used a lot of different rifles during my 50-plus years of deer hunting. Early on in my hunting life that was because the only firearm I owned was a Harrington & Richardson Topper Junior 20 gauge shotgun. So, when deer season rolled around I carried whatever rifle my Uncle Cecil handed me.
That was fine with me; I was just happy he or my brother-in-law Don took me afield.

Jeff Frischkorn: Ohio outdoorsmen submit wish lists for 2026

Every two years, Ohio’s executive and legislative branches try to get on the same page in determining what needs to be built.
That sort of budget building is different from the state’s biennial operating budget, which is typically done in odd-numbered years. Operating budgets are designed to help ensure that the wheels of government keep going round and round.
