What’s it take to be a natural resources officer? Ohio DNR offering open houses

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) invites anyone interested in a meaningful, mission-driven career to attend one of 11 upcoming natural resources officer (NRO) open houses being held across the state.
“Increasing the number of natural resources officers across that state has been an important mission for myself and Gov. Mike DeWine,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “NROs are crucial to ensuring people who explore our great outdoors are safe while protecting and conserving Ohio’s natural spaces.”

Prioritize these safety tips during Ohio winters

As winter weather continues across the state, the Ohio DNR (ODNR) is reminding Ohioans to make safety their top priority when enjoying seasonal outdoor activities, especially around ice. From ice fishing and snowmobiling to hiking and winter boating, preparation and awareness can mean the difference between a memorable outing and a dangerous situation.

Ohio’s Bucyrus fur auction canceled, but Kidron still on tap

Due to not enough trappers registering for the Bucyrus fur auction, the Ohio State Trappers Association (OSTA) cancelled it, with Kidron becoming the organization’s sole event of this type in 2026.
With less than 10 sellers registering ahead of time, fewer buyers would have elected to attend in Bucyrus, which would have likely led to lower prices offered for the pelts, according to OSTA fur auction coordinator Shawn Bentley.

More than 13,000 deer fall during Ohio’s muzzleloader hunt

Ohio’s 2026 muzzleloader hunters killed 421 fewer animals than they did during its 2025 counterpart. Still, a harvest of 13,055 whitetails is nothing to sneeze at, either.
Even so, both years showed declines from their respective three-year averages. And, it must be noted, too, that several southeast Ohio countries recorded steep declines. This steep slide no doubt was due to heavy tolls on deer caused last summer by a rampant breakout of the nearly-always fatal viral infection Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, or EHD.

Partnerships lead to novel elk habitat project in Pennsylvania

A major habitat initiative is underway in the Moshannon State Forest just northeast of Parker Dam State Park, in Clearfield County, Pa. Boots-on-the-ground work began in 2025, with the first two areas cleared and planted early last summer.
Although tree cutting and soil preparation did not begin until 2025, the concept for the Fairview Woodland Savannah Project dates back to 2022.

Commentary: Growing old in the outdoors can be a daunting task

There are special feelings and apprehensions as folks get older. As an aging hunter and fisherman, I began noting this 16 years ago at age 50.
Mortality, limitations of certain activities, and the sadness that this reality brings is often difficult to reconcile. I’ve often believed over the years, that I really did not fear too much in the outdoors, but as time went on, certain uncertainties came to the fore.
