Pennsylvania lawmakers want national searches for directors of hunting and fishing agencies

Two legislators are planning to introduce legislation to change the way executive directors of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Fish & Boat Commission are selected.
State Rep. Jim Haddock, D-Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, and Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria County, have circulated a memo outlining plans for legislation that would require both agencies to conduct a publicly advertised, national search to fill future executive director vacancies.

Pennsylvania Mixed Bag: Allegheny National Forest closes buildings with safety concerns

The U.S. Forest Service on Dec. 16 announced that it is restricting public access to several facilities in Highland Township, Elk County, within Allegheny National Forest to protect public health and safety. The closure order was signed due to unsafe conditions caused by hazardous materials and structurally unsound buildings.

U.S. Steel fine for pollution in Pennsylvania’s Monongahela River called ‘meager’

Although U.S. Steel has been sanctioned for repeatedly leaking oil into the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh, clean water advocates say the penalties are too lenient.
An agreement signed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Nov. 20 requires the manufacturing giant to pay $135,000 and implement stronger controls to prevent future petrochemical sheening discharges from outfalls at its Mon Valley Works – Irvin Plant.

More than 30 predator hunts scheduled across Pennsylvania

At least 31 organized predator hunts are scheduled across Pennsylvania, and hunters are eager to participate. Hunts begin this month and continue through late March.
Fifteen hunts are planned to start in January – beginning with the Woodcock Valley Sportsmen Predator Hunt, Jan. 15-18, centered in Huntingdon County.
