Bill Hilts, Jr.: Safety is job No. 1 for ice anglers; here’s what to consider

I poured myself a cup of Tim Horton coffee at 5:30 a.m. this December morning and checked out the thermometer. It read a crisp 7 degrees in Lockport, N.Y.
I turned on the local news and listened to Patrick Hammer on WGRZ forecast that there will be more cold days like this in the next 10 days in Western New York. Winter has arrived and ice fishing is just around the corner. I turned to my friend, Scott Brauer, of Gasport, an authority on all things hard water, for some safety tips – your top priority when it comes to ice fishing.

Idaho transforms tag structure for nonresident big game hunters

Idaho’s nonresident big game hunters should expect something different when planning for the 2026 season.
The Gem State has transitioned its nonresident tag distribution process from an over-the-counter, first-come-first-served system to a draw system, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game announced in a press release on November 24. Nonresident hunters have until December 15 to submit draw applications.

Eau Claire chain draws anglers to Wisconsin’s Bayfield County

Wisconsin is dotted with popular lake chains, including the Eau Claire Chain, consisting of Upper and Middle Eau Claire lakes in Bayfield County and Lower Eau Claire Lake, which is split between Bayfield and Douglas counties.
The DNR last surveyed Upper Eau Claire in 2017-18 to assess its game fish populations, primarily walleyes and muskies. Meanwhile, the crews ran a creel survey on Middle Eau Claire in 2022-23.

Backyard and Beyond: Hawk saved from snake’s death grip

A proud granddad sent in a stunning photo and even more astonishing tale: Bill Hayes’ grandsons, Joseph, Phillip, and Andrew, ranging in age from 21 to 17, spend a great deal of time outdoors. They were out checking their trail cameras one fall day when they noticed a red-tailed hawk pecking at something in the grass up ahead.
