Otters rebound to thrive in Illinois’ Will County

From a low of just 100 in the 1980s to more than 11,000 today, the river otter has made a remarkable comeback in Illinois. Will County has become a hot spot for these apex predators, which feed on fish and frogs along the Des Plaines River from the Rock Run Rookery Preserve north to Keepataw Preserve in DuPage Township.

New York’s Cattaraugus Creek focus of new effort to stock lake sturgeon

Lake sturgeon, a native species of New York and capable of living for more than 100 years, has been making a comeback in recent years. Thanks to the efforts of local fishing agencies, Mother Nature is getting a bit more of a helping hand to bring back these swimming dinosaurs.
In mid-October 2025, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, in partnership with the Seneca Nation of Indians and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, began stocking lake sturgeon into Cattaraugus Creek, a tributary of Lake Erie.

Commentary: No action on striped bass is an opportunity lost

Recently, I sat through six hours of a ASMFC (Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Council) meeting on Addendum III to the Striped Bass Management Program to discuss and approve forward plans to protect and grow the population of striped bass.
Since the issue of the management program, there have been several initiatives affecting both the commercial and recreational communities to reduce mortality (take, release loss, by-catch loss…) with the goal being to re-establish and grow the striped bass population.
