Steve Carney: My Minnesota duck season was not pretty; and a November to remember for walleyes

The Minnesota duck season is ending soon (it ended Nov. 25 in the north zone, and it ends Nov. 30 in the central zone and Dec. 7 in the south), and once again, it was not pretty for this writer. I thought last season was a bust, but this season was probably the worst season ever.
For the first time in 55 years of waterfowling, I didn’t shoot a single teal. Not one!

Volunteers help track predator-prey connections on Isle Royale

LynnAnne Vesper’s backpack grew heavier with each passing day on Isle Royale, but not because she was carrying extra supplies. Instead, moose skulls and leg bones accumulated on her pack as she and her volunteer team bushwhacked across the remote Lake Superior island.
“On a canoe trip, your food pack gets lighter,” Vesper told members of Grand Marais’ Tuesday Group in late October as she recounted her experiences as a group leader for the Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Research Project. “On ‘Moose Watch,’ your pack gets heavier.”

Streams of Thought: Minnesota hunters, don’t sell your deer shotguns just yet

At this point, it’s clear that the matter is arousing plenty of interest in southern counties, where commissioners may follow 2025 state legislation that allows the use of rifles in what would then be a “former” zone to take effect, or pass an ordinance to keep shotgun use only (or muzzleloader) in place, as has been the rule for many decades.

Minnesota’s deer harvest up 9% over 2024

With more firearms hunting opportunities on the horizon for Minnesota hunters, the preliminary firearms deer harvest of 131,623 deer – from opener on Saturday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 23 – is up 9% from last year.
“The vast majority (of the kill) just occurs those first nine days – huge effort on that first weekend,” said Paul Burr, the Minnesota DNR’s acting big-game program coordinator.
